Empangeni, KZN — ZCC Accident claims nine lives. What was meant to be a day of celebration turned into a heartbreaking tragedy on Sunday morning, 11 May, when a devastating road accident claimed the lives of nine people, most of them mothers, along the N2 highway.

The crash occurred at approximately 6:47 AM, just after the Mthunzini Toll Plaza on the N2 Northbound route near Empangeni. According to preliminary reports from the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI), the accident involved a tow truck and a Hyundai H-1 minibus, which was transporting members of the Zion Christian Church (ZCC) en route to a religious gathering in Dukuduku, uMtubatuba.

ZCC Accident Leaves Families and Congregation Devastated

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Mr. Ndabezinhle Sibiya, expressed deep sorrow following the tragic ZCC accident.

“On this Mother’s Day, a day meant for celebrating and honouring mothers, we are faced with an unspeakable tragedy,” said MEC Sibiya. “At around 6:47 AM, I was informed by the RTI of a horrific collision involving a Hyundai H-1 carrying congregants of the Zion Christian Church and a tow truck. Tragically, nine lives were lost at the scene, most of whom were mothers. This is a painful loss, not only for the affected families but for the entire community.”

MEC Sibiya highlighted the profound emotional toll that such a tragedy brings to families, especially on a day dedicated to recognising the vital role of mothers. “Losing a mother creates a void that is impossible to fill. It alters the family dynamic in the most painful way and leaves behind a trail of grief and heartbreak.”

Investigation Launched Into N2 ZCC Accident

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, and several injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention. The extent of the injuries remains under assessment.

In response to the tragedy, MEC Sibiya announced that a special team from his office has been mobilised to provide support to the affected families and the ZCC congregation during this challenging period. “We extend our deepest condolences to the bereaved families and the entire church community. We are working closely with the church leadership to offer assistance and comfort.”

Furthermore, the MEC has tasked the Road Traffic Inspectorate, in collaboration with the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances leading to the ZCC accident. “We need to understand what went wrong and ensure accountability where necessary. Road safety remains a critical priority for us, and incidents of this nature cannot go unanswered,” he emphasised.

Authorities are urging motorists to exercise heightened caution on the roads, especially during peak travel times and special occasions when traffic volumes increase. This incident serves as a somber reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of road safety for all.
