Orlando Pirates may have remained quiet in the January transfer window, but their eye has shifted to internal talent development. Rising star Neo Mokoena has caught the attention of coach Jose Riveiro and his technical team, setting the stage for a potential first-team promotion.

The Buccaneers have been closely monitoring their DStv Diski Challenge (DDC) squad, where Mokoena has delivered standout performances. Sources indicate that discussions are underway to elevate the young winger to the senior team, following a similar path to Mohau Nkota.

Mokoena and Mbokazi Training with the team

“He is a winger. A very good winger. I think they are doing it for this season. They are looking beyond this season already,” a source revealed. “You know this is how they did with Mohau Nkota. They promoted him, and he had been training with the first team until this season. Now it’s Neo (Mokoena) as well as defender Mbekezeli Mbokazi who is training with the first team. Both have been impressive, and it’s apparently believed that the coach and the technical team are happy with their progress.”

This move aligns with Pirates’ long-term vision of blending youth with experience to create a competitive squad. With multiple competitions on the horizon, fresh legs could provide the necessary depth for the upcoming season.

Pirates Planning for a competitive 2025/2026 Season

“Next season they could play in all five tournaments. The MTN 8, Carling Knockout, Nedbank Cup, Betway Premiership, and CAF Champions League, so they need fresh legs as well as experienced players,” the source added.

Currently, several young talents from the club’s development ranks have already integrated into the first team, including Relebohile Mofokeng, Mohau Nkota, Thabiso Sesane, Siyabonga Ndlozi, Boitumelo Radiopane, and Mbekezeli Mbokazi.

Nkota secures lucrative boot deal

In other news, Pirates’ breakout star Mohau Nkota has taken a significant step in his professional career by signing his first boot sponsorship deal. The 20-year-old right-winger, who has been electrifying the field this season, is now officially a Nike athlete. His agency confirmed that he secured a five-year contract, marking a major milestone in his journey.

With young talents rising through the ranks and established players leading the charge, Orlando Pirates are setting themselves up for a dynamic and competitive season ahead.
