Today’s Orlando Pirates news wrap looks at the contentious issue of Monnapule Saleng, Kaizer Chiefs’ greatest fear and a potential exit for Kimvuidi.

Saleng is out of the picture, for now

Monnapule Saleng has been mysteriously absent from training and matchday squads in recent weeks. This has fuelled a media frenzy around what’s happening with the 26-year-old winger. ‘Private’ reasons have been cited by the club. Saleng has only appeared three times in the Betway Premiership this term, with a return of two goals.

Is he the Kaizer Chiefs slayer?

Saleng scored a match-winning brace against Kaizer Chiefs in March 2024 when the sides last met. Orlando Pirates boss Jose Riveiro took a big gamble by replacing Karim Kimvuidi with Saleng and it paid off handsomely. This guy loves playing in big games.

Have Pirates found a potential Makgopa replacement?

Orlando Pirates are taking a closer look at Richards Bay striker Yanela Mbuthuma. The 22-year-old has been likened to Evidence Makgopa because of his counter-pressing abilities and great work ethic. These are qualities manager Jose Riveiro admires.

Immortality loading?

Jose Riveiro’s Sea Robbers are into the quarter-finals of this season’s Caf Champions League. They’ve still got group-stage clashes to negotiate. If they go all the way to the final and also the Nedbank Cup final, they’ve got a maximum of 31 matches still to play, including 19 in the Betway Premiership. That’s 2790 minutes of competitive action, before stoppages.

Is Kimvuidi leaving in search of game time?

According to Soccer Laduma, Orlando Pirates are considering a loan deal for Kimvuidi. The Congolese playmaker arrived at the club as a teenager to much fanfare. He impressed for Richards Bay in the 2022-2023 campaign, making 29 league appearances for them that season. Kimvuidi only appeared 17 times in the 2023-2024 league season in his debut campaign for the Buccaneers. This term he’s chalked up just two outings in the Betway Prem and seven in total across all competitions. Clearly, he needs to move elsewhere to get valuable minutes.
