Manchester United are making significant strides in their pursuit of Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha, with personal terms reportedly agreed upon and a five-year contract on the table. The 25-year-old Brazilian has emerged as a top target for United’s new manager, Ruben Amorim, who sees Cunha as a pivotal addition to his tactical setup. However, finalizing the transfer hinges on negotiations with Wolves, who are holding out for the full £62.5 million release clause. Manchester United are exploring payment in instalments to comply with Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.

Cunha has had an impressive season, scoring 16 goals and providing four assists in 31 appearances. His versatility allows him to play as a forward, second striker, or winger, making him an attractive option for Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation. Despite signing a new 4.5-year deal with Wolves in February, Cunha has expressed a desire to “take the next step” in his career, indicating openness to the move.

However, not everyone is convinced about the potential transfer. Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has voiced concerns over Cunha’s fit within the current squad dynamics. “Is he a centre-forward or is he a wide player? There’s no doubt that he has quality, and of course, it would be nice to sign him, but I worry about where he fits in,” Scholes commented. He also highlighted the team’s struggles, stating, “It just feels like it’s such a bad place to go. The quality of play right now is so poor.”

United have advanced on their deal to sign the Wolves forward.

To facilitate the transfer, United are considering player sales to raise funds. Academy graduate Alejandro Garnacho is reportedly open to leaving, with Atletico Madrid showing interest. Selling homegrown players like Garnacho offers full profit under Premier League sustainability regulations, aiding United’s financial strategy.

Additionally, Marcus Rashford, currently on loan at Aston Villa, could be sold to generate funds. Villa have an option to buy Rashford for £40 million, but United may seek a higher fee from other clubs. Offloading Rashford would also free up significant salary obligations, providing close to £100 million in funding toward Cunha’s transfer and salary.

As United continue to navigate the complexities of the transfer market, balancing financial constraints with squad rebuilding efforts remains a priority. The potential acquisition of Cunha represents a strategic move to enhance the team’s attacking options under Amorim’s leadership.

The question is whether these names aren’t in the class of Cunha or not just flourishing in Ruben Amorim’s tactical system. Nevertheless, despite the concerns, Amorim is expected to be allowed swarthes to build his squad for the next campaign with some United players expected to leave this summer.
