The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has initiated a manhunt for a police constable accused of fatally shooting a 35-year-old man in Protea Glen, Soweto. According to IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping, the accused officer, affiliated with the Railway Protection and Security Services at Park Station, is alleged to have carried out the fatal shooting after luring the victim outside his home.

“Eyewitnesses report that the deceased was at home watching a soccer match with his brother when he received a call to come outside,” Suping said.

It is alleged that the caller, dressed in full police uniform, shot the man and fled the scene in a silver Toyota Etios.

Suping added, “The victim was declared dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the chest. A bullet and cartridge were recovered at the crime scene, and the body was transported to Diepkloof Mortuary.”

Investigation and Search

The suspect failed to report for his scheduled night duty at Park Station on the evening of the incident. IPID has since taken over the investigation and confirmed that a murder case has been opened.

“A search for the accused officer is ongoing,” Suping stated, urging anyone with information to come forward.

Another Officer Charged with Murder

In a separate case, a 42-year-old police sergeant from Eldorado Park has been charged with the murder of his 22-year-old girlfriend, Chesnay Patricia Keppler. Keppler, a member of the Gauteng Crime Prevention Wardens, known as amaPanyaza, worked alongside the accused at the Eldorado Park police station.

According to Suping, the officer allegedly used his service pistol to fire multiple shots through the window of Keppler’s residence in the early hours of Thursday following a domestic dispute.

Suping explained, “The officer fled the scene after the incident. He has since been arrested and is set to appear in the Protea Magistrate’s Court on Monday, December 30, 2024.”

Both cases have raised serious concerns about the conduct of law enforcement officers. The use of service firearms in acts of violence, especially domestic disputes, has called into question the systems in place to monitor and regulate police behavior.
