Police Rescue Two Abducted Children, Arrest Suspects in Anambra State
The Anambra State Police Command has successfully rescued two abducted minors and arrested two suspects involved in their alleged kidnapping. The incident took place in Okpuno-Oba, located within the Idemili-South Local Government Area of Anambra State. This decisive action once again highlights the commitment of the Police to combating crimes against vulnerable groups, particularly children.
The operation, which took place on June 12, was conducted by Police operatives attached to the Ozubulu Division. It resulted in the arrest of Daniel Onyedika, a 19-year-old male, and Nkechi Onuwa, a 25-year-old female. The two are accused of abducting the children, who are reportedly aged between three and five years old.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga, the rescue was made possible due to the timely report of the children’s mother. The woman had become alarmed after one of her children came running to inform her that two of his siblings had been taken away by an unknown individual.
The children had been en route to her shop, which is located at Nwafor Junction, Eziora, Ozubulu, when the incident occurred. Thanks to the quick response from the Police operatives, the abducted minors were successfully rescued before they could be taken far from the scene.
“Upon receiving the report, operatives attached to the Ozubulu Police Division swung into action and traced the suspects to Okpuno-Oba, Idemili-South, where they were apprehended and the children rescued,” SP Ikenga confirmed.
He also noted that further investigations are ongoing, and the case will be charged to court as soon as the Police complete their inquiries.
Police Demonstrate Commitment to Child Protection
SP Ikenga emphasized that this operation is not just a one-time success, but a demonstration of the Police’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding children and other vulnerable individuals from criminal acts.
“This achievement showcases the command’s dedication to protecting vulnerable members of the society and tackling crimes against children,” Ikenga said.
Child abduction is a growing concern in many parts of Nigeria, and the Police have intensified their surveillance and community engagement efforts to curb such crimes. With incidents ranging from domestic abuse to trafficking, the need for robust child protection mechanisms has never been more critical.
The two arrested suspects, Daniel Onyedika and Nkechi Onuwa, are currently in Police custody and are cooperating with ongoing investigations. The officers have yet to reveal the motive behind the attempted abduction, but have assured the public that justice will be served.
“The suspects will be arraigned in court following the conclusion of the investigation. The Police remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all children in Anambra State,” Ikenga added.
It is unclear at this stage whether the suspects are linked to any larger child trafficking network, but the Police are exploring all angles to ensure that no accomplice escapes justice.
The Anambra State Command has praised the vigilance of the victim’s family and the general public. The mother’s quick action in reporting the incident helped ensure the swift intervention of law enforcement.
The officers continue to encourage residents to remain alert and report any suspicious activities in their neighborhoods. Community cooperation, according to officials, plays a vital role in preventing crimes before they escalate.
“When people act quickly and trust the Police, it becomes easier to detect and prevent criminal activities. Community policing is key,” Ikenga emphasized.
This latest operation by the Anambra State Police Command serves as a powerful reminder of the important role law enforcement plays in child protection and community safety. With the suspects now in custody and the children safely returned to their families, the case underlines the success of swift, coordinated action by the Police.
As investigations continue, the officers are expected to increase surveillance around schools, markets, and other public areas to prevent similar incidents. The public is encouraged to remain proactive, report suspicious behavior, and partner with local law enforcement to safeguard children from harm.
This success story also sends a strong message to would-be offenders: crimes against children will not be tolerated, and the Police will pursue justice relentlessly.
