The Prince and Princess of Wales, William and Kate, brought royal sparkle to Wales this week. They dodged the London drizzle and headed west.

Their mission? To support communities battered by recent floods.

WILLIAM & KATE AT THE WELSH CAKE SHOP

The couple focused their visit on Pontypridd, a town in South Wales devastated by storms. But it wasn’t all doom and gloom—Wills and Kate jumped right in.

They rolled up their sleeves at The Welsh Cake Shop, according to People.

They were ready to try their hand at making Welsh cakes. These are similar to scones, with Theresa Connor, the shop owner, guiding them.

WILLIAM & KATE BAKING TOGETHER

The royal couple kneaded dough and rolled it out. They even helped cook the cakes on a traditional stove, according to BBC.

Prince William couldn’t resist a joke, “You’ll have to sell these for half price,” he quipped.

Connor was thrilled to host them. “They were personable and friendly and down to earth,” she said. “They were lovely.”

She also mentioned it was the couple’s first attempt at making Welsh Cakes. “They said they’d eaten lots, but they’d never made them.

And they said they thoroughly enjoyed the experience,” she explained.

THE FLOODS

Imagine Wills and Kate baking, it is a far cry from opening Parliament, and it brings them closer to everyday folk. This down-to-earth approach resonates with South Africans.

The visit wasn’t just about baking, as the Prince and Princess visited the Fountain Café. They spoke with local business owners.

They heard about the impact of the floods, as the storms caused major disruption. Businesses lost valuable stock. A bookstore even lost about $25,000 (R462,500) worth of books.

GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

Dawn Prior, the café owner, was touched by their visit. “The flooding is the main reason they came. They are here because they care,” she said.

“And it gives everyone a boost, and it’s really important for everyone. You could see by how many people turned out for them.”

Prince William showed genuine concern, according to Sky News.

“Prince William showed interest and wanted to take their names, maybe he’ll give the authorities a nudge because there are things that can be done,” Prior added.

Their final stop was the Meadow Street Community Garden and Woodland.

WILLIAM & KATE CONNECTION TO WALES

This space was created to bring the community together offering gardening and other activities. The floods damaged it. Volunteers quickly restored it.

Kate, passionate about well-being, was particularly interested, as the garden promotes nature’s benefits. It helps build resilience and also fosters connections between people.

Wills and Kate have a special connection to Wales, as they lived in Anglesey after they married. William worked as an air-sea rescue pilot when they became the Prince and Princess of Wales in 2022.

COMMITTED TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE

This was after Queen Elizabeth’s death. This visit shows the royal’s care, as they connect with communities.

They eagerly get their hands dirty, from baking cakes to discussing flood relief, showing their commitment to making a difference.
