R15 million tug-of-war: Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs battle for Appollis
R15 Million face off between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs kicks off, here is the latest.
The transfer market is ablaze with rumours as Pirates and Chiefs reportedly go head-to-head to secure Polokwane City’s star midfielder, Oswin Appollis. According to insiders, both clubs are pulling out all the stops, with the Bucs allegedly preparing a staggering R15 million offer, while Chiefs are believed to have matched the bid.
Chiefs’ initial offer rejected
Amakhosi initially led the race but hit a stumbling block when Polokwane City rejected their R10 million proposal. Orlando Pirates then upped the ante, reportedly preparing to offer R15 million plus a player to sweeten the deal.
“The big difference is about R5 million, and there were internal plans to offer Polokwane City a player on top of the R15 million,” revealed a source close to the negotiations.
This strategic move appears to have reignited Chiefs’ interest. Determined not to be outbid, they are now rumored to be preparing an improved counteroffer.
“It’s like a catfight. You know how it is. Chiefs were the first to show interest in Appollis, but then Pirates came in, and now Chiefs want to make a better offer,” the source added.
No concrete offers yet
Despite the swirling rumours, insiders have confirmed that neither club has tabled an official bid so far.
“If you ask me, those are false rumors. But you never know,” said a source close to the situation, suggesting the saga is far from over.
At just 23 years old, Oswin Appollis has shown immense promise since joining Polokwane City from Pretoria Callies last season. His seven goals and five assists in 31 appearances last year showcased his talent. However, this season has been a different story. With only one goal and no assists in 14 matches across all competitions, Appollis’ form has noticeably dipped.
Some speculate that the failed move to Kaizer Chiefs during the last transfer window may have affected his performance.
Why Appollis is still a hot commodity
Despite his current struggles, Appollis remains a sought- after player. His stellar form for Bafana Bafana has kept him in the spotlight, proving that his talent extends beyond club performances. Both Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs see him as a long-term asset who could elevate their midfield options.
The rivalry between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is not just confined to the pitch. As the battle for Appollis intensifies, all eyes are on Polokwane City’s decision. Will Pirates’ hefty bid and added player incentive sway the club, or will Chiefs mount a successful counteroffer to secure the talented midfielder?
