Recent Graduate? Gain Hands-On Experience with the WTO’s International Trade Internship in Various Fields
,Are you a postgraduate student or recent graduate eager to gain firsthand insight into the world of international trade? The World Trade Organization (WTO) offers a unique opportunity through its internship programs, designed to equip emerging professionals with practical experience and deepen their understanding of the multilateral trading system.
About the WTO Internship Programs
The WTO maintains three distinct internship pathways, each tailored to support different groups of aspiring professionals:
- The WTO Internship Programme
Open to postgraduate students and recent graduates from all WTO member countries and territories engaged in accession negotiations. This program provides a broad platform for those seeking to immerse themselves in WTO’s functions and policies. - China’s LDCs, Accessions, and General Internship Programme
Specifically reserved for postgraduate students or recent graduates from developing countries and least developed countries (LDCs). Annually, up to ten internships are offered under this scheme, emphasizing diversity and capacity-building among countries with developing trade systems. - WTO Support Programme for Doctoral Studies
Targeted at Ph.D. students from developing nations and LDCs who are working on their thesis. This program supports academic research linked to WTO’s core areas and fosters the development of future trade experts.
Eligibility and Application Criteria
Candidates must be nationals of WTO member states or observer governments. Applicants should have completed at least one year of postgraduate study (such as a Master’s degree) in relevant fields like economics, law, political science, or international relations. The programs specify an age range between 21 and 30 years old.
A roster of qualified candidates is maintained for potential short-notice recruitment based on specific needs. The selection process emphasizes merit, academic qualifications, and expertise, with the goal of promoting diversity within the organization.
Internship Details and Conditions
Internships typically last between three and six months, with the possibility of splitting the assignment between two divisions if needed. The start date is flexible, and the placement occurs in Geneva, Switzerland.
While the WTO provides a daily allowance (CHF 60 for most interns and CHF 90 for those in the China LDCs program), it does not cover travel or accommodation expenses. Interns are responsible for their own travel arrangements, insurance, and living costs, which is an important consideration given Geneva’s high living expenses.
Interns are not considered staff members but are expected to work full-time, carrying out assignments under the supervision of WTO staff. They may receive a work and residence permit (Swiss legitimation card “H”) depending on their nationality and residency status.
Post-Internship Opportunities and Evaluations
Upon completion, interns receive an evaluation report from their supervisor, and they are also asked to evaluate their experience. While the internship does not guarantee future employment within the WTO, it offers valuable exposure and networking opportunities, and interns are encouraged to apply for external vacancies.
Important Deadlines and How to Apply
The application deadline for the current cycle is December 31, 2025. The position is posted as full-time, and interested candidates should review the specific requirements and links provided by the WTO to ensure eligibility and complete their application.
The WTO internship program is a competitive and prestigious opportunity for young professionals seeking to contribute to international trade policy and gain global experience. If you meet the criteria and are ready for an enriching professional journey in Geneva, this internship could be the stepping stone toward a career in international trade and diplomacy.
