Background: UN Women’s Commitment to Gender Equality
Grounded in the principle of equality articulated in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women is dedicated to the elimination of discrimination against women and girls. Its mission extends to empowering women and achieving parity between genders in development, human rights, humanitarian ventures, and peace and security initiatives. The organization’s efforts are more essential now than ever, especially in light of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which outlines ambitious goals to end poverty and promote prosperity while safeguarding the planet—an agenda inextricably linked to gender equality.
Economic empowerment stands as a central pillar in UN Women’s agenda. By collaborating with a broad spectrum of stakeholders—including governments, civil society organizations, and international partners—UN Women promotes equitable economic opportunities for women, particularly those facing marginalization. The recently launched Women’s Economic Empowerment Strategy serves as a framework aligning the organization’s strategy with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), focusing on three Gender Equality Accelerators (GEAs):
- Women in the World of Work
- Transforming Care Systems
- Gender-Responsive Climate Action
The GEA aimed at Transforming the Care Economy endeavors to shift societal perceptions of care work, ensuring it is recognized, reduced, and redistributed. This initiative ultimately aims to improve the lives of women and girls across various demographics and geographical locations.
