Reported Kaizer Chiefs target Asanele Velebayi is inspired by Rushwin Dortley and Relebohile Mofokeng. What’s the latest?

Velebayi wants to be a Bafana regular

Asanele Velebayi has been consistently linked with a switch to Kaizer Chiefs after the 21-year-old’s stellar displays for Cape Town Spurs. The winger has seen former teammate Rushwin Dortley make the move to Amakhosi and become a regular for the South African national team.

Via Goal:

“My peers, the likes of (Rushwin) Dortley, have done well. I don’t see what will stop me from reaching those levels or surpassing them. At the moment, I’m focused on my job at Cape Town Spurs, but that does not mean I don’t think about the future,” Velebayi told FARPost

“What I just avoid is losing focus and affecting my game. I can only pray that we emerge successful as a team. As an individual, I aim to break into Bafana Bafana. Seeing Dortley and Relebohile Mofokeng makes me feel that as youngsters, we are not far.

“I believe that is a big platform for me. We all want to rise, but it’s a process. As a player, the goal is to grow and be a Bafana player. But when interests from bigger teams come, we must be able to deal with the level of attention,” he added.

“I envy what they (Mofokeng and Dortley) are doing at club and national team, and it is something that I also hope to do.”

Is Appollis a higher priority for Chiefs?

With Spurs playing hard-ball over Velebayi, a youth product they’re truly proud of having nurtured, Chiefs are turning to 23-year-old Oswin Appollis. The 23-year-old is a plug-and-play option in the Betway Premiership despiute his relatively tender age and is also a full Bafana international. It’s reported that Chiefs have made a tempting offer to Polokwane to blow fellow suitors Orlando Pirates out the water. The question is, how much is Appollis worth?

Dortley is a shining light in an otherwise disapointing campaign

Rushwin Dortley is relatively young for his position as a 22-year-old central defender. The former Cape Town Spurs man has settled right into his pressurised surroundings, becoming one of the first names on the team sheet for Chiefs and now Bafana Bafana. Calm and cultured on the ball and impressively aggressive in the air, Dortley has what it takes to become one of the best defenders in the country. The problem with their reliance on Dortley is that he’s yet to have a slump in form, and that’s an inevitability for a player of his relative lack of experience. When it happens, who do they turn to? He’s appeared in all 12 Betway Prem clashes this term.
