Main Objectives of the Role

The primary responsibility for the household team leaders will be the supervision of staff tasked with cleaning and maintaining all assigned areas within the University, specifically those under the Housekeeping Services banner. The role is crucial in ensuring that the high standards of cleanliness and hygiene are upheld throughout the residence halls, contributing significantly to the well-being of all residents and guests.

In a leadership capacity, the successful candidates will be expected to engage in the planning and coordination of cleaning services, overseeing and mentoring staff in a particular residence hall. Additionally, the role encompasses submitting and following up on maintenance requisitions, managing furnishings, and ensuring the general upkeep of buildings within the assigned area. The Housekeeper is expected to respond promptly and effectively to any other reasonable requests from their Line Manager, reinforcing a responsive and cooperative work environment.

Requirements for Applicants

To be considered for this pivotal role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  1. Educational Qualifications: A minimum of a Grade 12 certificate is essential to qualify for this position.
  2. Relevant Experience: Candidates should possess approximately four years of relevant experience, including:
  • A minimum of three years of cleaning experience in an industrial setting where specific hygiene and cleaning practices were adhered to.
  • At least six months of working experience in stock control and basic record-keeping.
  • Previous administration experience within a computerized environment is also necessary.
  • Experience drafting daily schedules and managing related electronic correspondence is highly desirable.
  • A minimum of two years in a supervisory or team leader position; alternatively, possession of a one-year Staff Supervision Certificate along with one year of supervisory experience (not necessarily concurrent) will also be accepted.

Remuneration

The successful candidates will receive an attractive annual remuneration package, comprising:

  • Basic Pensionable Salary: R307 301.00
  • Cost to Company: Approximately R421 604.00

While this position is advertised as a permanent position, it is crucial to note that the University reserves the right to appoint on a fixed-term contract of not less than three years. COVID-19 Vaccination Policy

Rhodes University has implemented a vaccination mandate as part of its Conditions of Service. All staff members would be required to comply with vaccination requirements if re-implemented.
