RIP: Several SANDF soldiers who died in the DRC laid to rest! Several South African National Defence Force (SANDF) soldiers who lost their lives while serving in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) were laid to rest in different parts of South Africa on Saturday.

The soldiers, who died in January, were caught in crossfire between M23 rebels and the DRC army forces during their peacekeeping mission. They were hailed as heroes for their bravery, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment to protecting civilians in conflict zones.

The funerals were attended by family members, friends, fellow soldiers, and government officials, all of whom gathered to pay their final respects. Many of the mourners spoke of the dedication and selflessness of the fallen soldiers, emphasizing the great personal risks they took while serving in the DRC.

Following an emotional repatriation process, the remains of the soldiers were formally handed over to their families at Swartkop Air Force Base in Centurion last week. This marked a solemn moment, as the country recognized their sacrifice and commitment to duty.

Honoring the Fallen Soldiers

In the Free State, a military funeral was held for Rifleman Tshidiso Mabele at a local stadium in Paul Roux. Described as selfless and kind, Mabele was remembered for his calm nature and dedication to his work. His family and colleagues expressed their heartache and deep loss, but also their immense pride in the role he played in defending and protecting others.

In the North West, Itumeleng Moreo was laid to rest in an emotional ceremony. He was described as a loving father and devoted husband, whose sacrifices and bravery will never be forgotten. Mourners spoke of his strong sense of duty, which led him to serve his country despite the dangers.

Meanwhile, in Limpopo, five other soldiers were honored and buried in military ceremonies, with full state honors. Their families, although devastated by the loss, expressed gratitude for the recognition given to their loved ones.

Additionally, the funeral services for Sergeant Theophilus Seepe and Rifleman Calvin Moagi are scheduled to take place next Saturday, allowing more time for their families and communities to prepare for their final farewells.

A Call for Recognition and Support

The passing of these brave soldiers has highlighted the risks and challenges faced by SANDF personnel on peacekeeping missions. Many of the speakers at the funerals called for greater support for soldiers and their families, particularly those who serve in high-conflict areas.

Military officials emphasized that the fallen soldiers did not die in vain, as their efforts contributed to restoring stability in the DRC. They reiterated their commitment to ensuring that South African troops deployed in peacekeeping missions receive the necessary resources and protection.

The SANDF has pledged to continue honoring the memories of the fallen soldiers and to provide ongoing support to their families.
