Job Purpose

South African Airways (SAA) wants you to join the SAA family as a First Officer.

As a First Officer, you will be expected to take all measures required for the safety of the flight, whether on the ground, or inflight, and be expected to perform the duties of a pilot for South African Airways as either a Second-In-Command Pilot (P2) or Cruise Relief Pilot (P3).

Qualifications & Experience

  • Matric Certificate / Grade 12 results / N3 or relevant tertiary qualifications (SAQA accredited)
  • Compulsory subjects: Mathematics or Statistics 101 and English (D symbol on higher grade or C symbol on standard grade) coupled with one of the following: Physical Science or Computer Science (D symbol on higher grade or C symbol on standard grade)
  • Valid South African Airline Transport Pilot’s License, or a Commercial Pilot License having completed all the ground subjects for the ATPL (previously known as a Frozen ATPL).  A valid ATPL License must be obtained within 4 years from date of employment with SAA with a multi engine instrument rating
  • Valid Class 1 medical
  • A minimum of 1,500 flying hours which includes 200 hours on multi-engine aircraft
  • Be a South African citizen with a valid Passport

Job Purpose

The role is responsible to monitor compliance with and adequacy of all the Airline’s policies, processes and procedures relating to South African Civil Aviation Regulations, applicable foreign regulations, IOSA- and ISAGO standards and SAA standard operating procedures.  The role conduct audits, inspections and quality investigations in all areas related to Maintenance, Flight Operations, Dispatch and OCC of the Airline and applicable third-party service providers, in order to proactively identify undesirable conditions and applicable areas requiring improvement.  

The role is further responsible for interaction with various levels of management both internally and externally to recommend, initiate and approve corrective action in these instances in line with SAA’s Quality Assurance Programme and ISO standards, to ensure the principles of continual improvement are applied throughout the organisation.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Provide input into the design of the Quality Assurance Strategy taking into account specialist expertise, best practice, benchmarking and market standards etc.
  • Recommends policies, processes, action plans and systems to support implementation of the strategy
  • Analyse cost drivers and provide recommendations on profitability of department
  • Calculate and submit budget requirements 
  • Ensure the effective application of the quality management functions to assist in the reduction of non-compliances and the impact thereof on efficiency in the applicable areas in relation to acceptable levels of regulatory compliance and the retention of IOSA registration (linked to STAR Alliance and IATA membership, vital to SAA business processes)
  • Enforce Governance and Risk Management policies, processes and systems
  • Engage in trend analysis, benchmarking, research, best practice to support optimisation of department
  • Manages projects to contribute to the optimisation of the Quality Assurance function
  • Assist with the structuring and implementation of IOSA and/ or ISAGO principles to enable the retention of required certifications
  • Liaise with applicable departments to determine any requirements for ad-hoc audits to special requirements or standards that need to be conducted during an audit period and accommodate these requests into the audit schedule 
  • Plan and conduct regulatory compliance surveys on behalf of and in conjunction with SAA departments engaged in Maintenance, Flight Operations, Dispatch and OCC (inclusive of third party services providers)
  • Correlate and analyses data received, compile reports and make recommendations for improvements
  • Apply the applicable audit processes to reports to ensure the principles of continual improvement are applied to survey outcomes
  • Provide assistance to the various applicable areas, departments and functions in preparation for SACAA AOC and/or ad-hoc audits, as well as IOSA/ ISAGO and code-share audits, providing guidance on effective and efficient means of compliance with the required standards and the implementation of corrective measures as and when required
  • Act as an audit guide during the conduct of audits on the Airline, as per the prescriptions and functions detailed in the Corporate Quality Management Manual, at the behest of the Manager Quality Assurance
  • Initiate, facilitate and execute projects relating to process improvement related to Maintenance, Flight Operations, Dispatch and OCC under the supervision of the Manager Quality Assurance
  • Report on results, develop and deliver presentations on results 
  • Train departmental managers in the utilisation of the quality assurance database, as appropriate to the functions of the department, for completeness and accuracy of audit information contained in the database, towards audit closure and generation of statistical data
  • Implement the quality assurance database (IQSMS) and promotion of utilisation thereof within SAA departments and external service providers (when required) to increase quality assurance departmental efficiencies
  • Liaise and negotiate with management and provide information and advice on effective and efficient corrective actions and improvement initiatives
  • Assist departments with the process mapping and the production of policies, processes and procedures
  • Research and determine applicable standards, regulations and requirements applicable to customer interactions and related functions within the Airline
  • Research and develop a database of third-party service providers that are contracted to provide services to SAA 
  • Populate with information regarding specifics as contract duration and/ or any extensions to the contract, service level agreements and/ or any measurable specifics relating to customer related service and/ or functions
  • Maintain and update the database on an annual basis as minimum or more frequently at the behest of the Manager Quality Assurance
  • Develop an audit schedule to accommodate third party service providers, as well as make provision for the monitoring the status of audits completed, dropped/ re-scheduled audits and follow-up actions required flowing from completed audits, as per the requirements of the SACAA regulations/ IOSA
  • Apply the Quality Assurance Programme and Quality Management System, processes and procedures to the audit schedule through the conduct of quality audits and/ or inspections
  • Perform audit duties
  • Implement and maintain SAA’s documentation management system
  • Produce quality assurance programme statistics and monthly reports

Qualifications & Experience

  • A relevant Bachelor Degree in Quality Management Systems and/ or related field e.g. human sciences/ human factors at NQF level 7 and/or 5 -7 years’ experience in a Safety/ Quality assurance role
  • Quality management systems (ISO 9001 or SABS)
  • 3 years’ experience with conducting internal IOSA audits within the relevant fields
  • 4 years’ experience in Part 121 operations as a Pilot or Part 145 operations as a Technician
  • IOSA auditor training completed and/ or auditor qualification in an associated field
  • Documentation management systems and business processes
  • Aviation related courses:
    • Safety Management Systems/ Aviation Programme Safety Management
    • Crew Resource Management/ Human Factors
    • Accident/ Incident Investigation(advantageous)

Job Purpose

The incumbent will be required to supply the departure control personnel and Flight Deck Crew with the relevant operational data required to calculate the zero-fuel, take-off and landing weight and corresponding centre-of-gravity position without exceeding the structural weight or CG limitations as specified by the aircraft manufacturer, and to undertake the physical weighing operation of SAA and customer aircraft, and therein calculate and compile the official weighing report.

The incumbent of this role is also responsible for programming, analysis, planning, developing, designing, maintaining, testing and coordinating of the weight and balance systems, system changes and new developments within the applicable system areas. The role also provides training to trainers and staff on new enhancements, system changes, personal computer load sheets and the COGNOS systems. The above also applies to the provision of services to 3rd party customers or any other entity as directed by the company.

The role is also responsible for the coordination with 3rd party suppliers and customers to ensure compliance to IATA, CAA and legislative regulations such as SACAA and IOSA. The role approves AHM-565 aircraft engineering data for SAA and foreign carrier systems for weight/balance and check-in for the handling of flights in the Flight Management System. Further to this, the role assists with the maintenance/ testing/ development of the COGNOS/AVIVA and PC load sheet (passenger/cargo and Seat Row Index) systems.

The role is also responsible for programming and approval of system aircraft engineering data for use of weight/balance and check-in worldwide, and ensuring that all aircrafts handled on Flight Management system are safe for operation and supports the optimization of cargo/passenger and aircraft loading services.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Provide input into the design of the Flight Technical Strategy and implement within area of responsibility
  • Recommends policies, processes, action plans and systems to support implementation of the strategy
  • Active verification of 3rd party accounts
  • Capturing of expenditure for budget purposes including capturing and record keeping of Weight and Balance invoices for audit purposes
  • Undertake strategic planning in relation to application system upgrades, new releases and migration to the new systems both local and internationally
  • Programming of aircraft engineering data (AHM-565) into the Amadeus system and ensure that the system is regularly updated
  • Sign off/approved data for Flight Management system weight and balance
  • Develop and program the seat row index trim as a quality control system for the main frame system
  • Design load sheets and load plans for all aircraft (including new aircraft) and set up templates to automate/reduce workload in load control sections thus increasing productivity in load control and ensure the accuracy of the system
  • Program, develop, test, approve and implement new system enhancements
  • Accompany all flights for load sheet purposes where there is not a certified handling agent
  • Provide cockpit crew with quick reference Dry Operating Weight/Index information
  • Investigate crew/staff error reports to ensure that the flight management system is correct and for the safety of all aircraft
  • Do seat row index trims and compare with system trims to ensure system is calculating accurately
  • Assist different stations after hours when called to support
  • Create/maintain post departure messages for SAA and handled carriers
  • Load Personal Computer load sheet at all stations for back up purposes which are developed as programmed
  • Keep up to date distribution list of AHM560/565 for handling agent not using our flight management system
  • Liaise with technology service providers when analysing system performance, diagnosing issues and planning for future changes
  • Participate in system reviews to include technical problems, provide solutions for hardware, software, and systems and troubleshoot operating anomalies using data review and methodologies and automated evaluation
  • Test all new developments and enhancements and the signing off thereof
  • Administer systems and user IDs which include creation, deletion, modification, resets or extension locally and internationally
  • Ensure that infrastructure and application, as well as IT processes and procedures, meet strict security requirements and comply with IT Risk Management guidelines
  • Document, communicate and escalate technical issues and articulate business impact
  • Review and interpret technical information and analyse situations to define issues and make recommendations
  • Plan/implement system migrations and new routes and hands on at stations
  • Assist with investigations of fraudulent activities in the operations
  • Develop and manage application support standards, procedures, training and other documentation as required
  • Provide reporting information on new enhancements to the team to inform decision making processes
  • Adhere to performance management schedule and relevant practices
  • Provide optimized W and B data and maintain records of all calculations and work done for each aircraft
  • Monitor and weigh aircraft according to prescribed procedures, declare the weight to the SACAA  and produce Weight and Balance reports for SAA and 3rd party aircraft
  • Control and liaise the functionality, calibration and validity of Passenger and Aircraft scales
  • Ensure computation of new Weight and CG from weighing results
  • Compile Weighing Report and associated documents for Regulatory Authorities
  • Customise Weight and Balance Control Manuals for SAA and 3rd party customers
  • Compile IATA Airport Handling Manuals (AHM565 – automation data) for Departure Control Systems for SAA and 3rd party customers
  • Calculate and compile weight and Balance data for foreign operators on request
  • Update and control operational data for Cockpit and ground staff on Laptops and i-Pads
  • Update and control programs and data from Airbus and Boeing
  • Monitor and Weigh aircraft according to prescribed procedures, produce Weight and Balance report for SAA and declare the weight to the SACAA
  • Provide training to Flight Crew and Dispatchers on the subjects of Weight and Balance

Qualifications & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant field at NQF level 7 and/or 5 – 7 years’ experience in the Aviation/ Technical field
  • Must have been a Load Controller OR a Qualified Aviation Technician with Secondary or held a Commercial Pilot License or higher
  • Certification on Automation and/or Aircraft Weighing will be an advantage
  • Proven track record in a Flight Technical position will be an advantage
  • Drivers’ license essential
  • Training/Experience in any of the following will be an advantage:
    • Dangerous goods, Route capacity control, Ramp/cargo procedures
    • Manual trims (narrow/wide body and freighters aircraft) certification
    • System trims for all aircraft type
    • Experience in aircraft loading
    • Seat row index trim

  • Create manual seat row index trims as required by CAA to make sure that our systems calculate correctly
