Popular Tshivenda soapie Muvhango has been losing viewers since it premiered in 1997. After 27 seasons, the soapie’s future seems bleak, as its one-season contract is set to end this year.

IS THIS THE END OF MUVHANGO?
Earlier this week, the drama series made headlines after it was reported that it had been cancelled.’ The alleged reports came after it was reported that Muvhango might not get a renewed contract in July.

Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela recently announced that Muvhango was being canned once again.

“Despite efforts to save the show by giving it a second chance last year and introducing new actors, with Leleti Khumalo roped in to bring star power, I’m reliably informed that the show will not be renewed beyond the current season,” he said.

Against his X post, he shared more updates on the drama series’ case, stressing that it was not canned but has not been renewed for a new season.

SABC’s Mmoni Ngubane commented on the reports: “The SABC can confirm that only one season of Muvhango is currently contracted.

“The current contract is set to end on 31 July 2025. The SABC cannot comment on the future of the programme at this stage.”

During the launch of Season 25, executive producer Duma Ndlovu revealed that he was bringing a new, revamped Muvhango by bringing in star actors to revive the show.

Two seasons later, the drama series has failed to attract viewers. According to TVSA, Muvhango has lost 4 million views in the past five years.

The publication adds that the show received less than 1 million in October 2024, and the numbers are not improving.

This was the first time Muvhango received less than a million viewers since its inception in 1997.

Viewers of the soapie Muvhango were not impressed with the season 27 premiere. The revamped show introduced a new logo, an opening sequence, and new characters.
