SABC reportedly replaces Muvhango
The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has reportedly signed a deal for a new drama series set to replace Muvhango in its 9:30 PM weekday timeslot on SABC2.
The upcoming show, currently titled Pimville Queens, is expected to take over the slot once Muvhango’s contract expires. However, sources suggest that Pimville Queens may just be a temporary working title, with changes expected before the show officially airs.
New Show Set to Take Over
According to sources close to the production, the new show is being developed by Bakwena Productions, which is owned by Kagiso Modupe and Rashaka “Rush” Moufhe, along with his wife, Brenda Mukwevho.
“It’s going to replace Muvhango. They started reaching out to potential cast members in December, and it’s an exciting time for them,” a source revealed.
Another insider confirmed that contracts have already been signed for the project, indicating that the production is well underway. However, it seems that there have been some delays.
“Shooting was supposed to begin soon, but the SABC reportedly asked them to rework some scripts. There are a few adjustments needed, but the show is happening, and everything is set,” the source added.
Hope Still Alive for Muvhango’s Renewal
While reports of Muvhango‘s cancellation have been circulating for months, some members of the cast and crew remain hopeful that the contract will be renewed.
A source close to the production of Muvhango expressed optimism that this may not be the end for the long-running show.
“They know this happens every year, but the contract always gets renewed. They are keeping their hopes high, thinking it will happen soon, and they will still be employed,” the source said.
Muvhango, which first aired in 1997, has been a staple of South African television for over two decades, making it one of the longest-running local dramas. Its potential cancellation has sparked disappointment among its loyal fan base.
Producers Remain Tight-Lipped
Bakwena Productions’ Managing Director and Executive Producer, Rashaka “Rush” Moufhe, declined to comment on the show’s details, instead directing questions to the SABC.
“I can’t comment on that. Please forward queries to the SABC,” he said.
Meanwhile, SABC Head of Communications, Mmoni Ngubane, did not confirm or deny whether Pimville Queens would replace Muvhango. Instead, she commented on broader programming changes.
“We can confirm that SABC2 is making changes to its programming. The channel will announce these and new shows in line with its usual processes in due time,” said Ngubane.
Speculation About Muvhango’s Future
The future of Muvhango has been uncertain for months. In February 2025, reports began circulating that the SABC was considering canceling the show after more than 25 years on air.
At the time, Ngubane said the broadcaster was unable to comment on the show’s long-term future.
“The SABC can confirm that only one season of Muvhango is currently contracted, and the current contract is set to end on 31 July 2025. The SABC cannot comment on the future of the programme at this stage,” she stated.
This statement left fans wondering whether Muvhango would be given another chance or if its time on South African screens was truly coming to an end.
The Impact of Muvhango‘s Possible Cancellation
If Muvhango is indeed replaced, it will mark the end of an era for South African television. The show has been praised for its authentic representation of Venda culture, setting it apart from other local soap operas.
The series has also played a crucial role in providing employment for actors, scriptwriters, and crew members in the industry.
While Pimville Queens is expected to bring fresh storytelling to the 9:30 PM slot, Muvhango‘s loyal fans might find it difficult to adjust to a new show.
Conclusion
The SABC’s reported signing of a deal for Pimville Queens signals major changes in the network’s programming. Although Muvhango‘s future remains uncertain, it is clear that the broadcaster is moving forward with new content.
Whether Muvhango will secure another contract renewal or be permanently replaced remains to be seen. However, for now, all eyes are on the SABC’s next announcement, which will determine the fate of one of South Africa’s most beloved soap operas.
