Firefighters are working tirelessly to contain an active fire that broke out above Kirstenbosch in Cape Town in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to reports, the fire was first spotted just before 4 a.m., prompting an immediate response from firefighting teams.

Massive Firefighting Effort Underway

The South African National Parks (SANParks) has deployed over 50 ground firefighters along with aerial resources to combat the raging fire.

The fire is currently burning in an inaccessible area above the Lady Anne Barnard trail, which poses a significant challenge to firefighting crews. Officials warn that if not contained, the fire could spread toward the back of Table Mountain, making the situation even more dangerous.

Difficult Terrain and Limited Water Access

Senior communications manager at SANParks, Charles Phalane, provided an update on the situation, highlighting the difficulties firefighters are facing.

“Firefighters have been battling the blaze for several hours in rugged terrain. Ground crews have been unable to access water sources for vehicles and hoses, but we have activated aerial support to control the flames. At this stage, no structures are at risk,” he stated.

Aerial Support Deployed

Due to the steep and rocky terrain, aerial firefighting teams have been called in to assist. Water-bombing helicopters are being used to douse the flames from above, helping to slow the spread of the fire.

Officials are hopeful that with continued aerial and ground efforts, they will be able to bring the fire under control before it spreads further.

Trail Closures and Safety Precautions

As a precautionary measure, SANParks has closed trails in the Newlands and Kirstenbosch areas to ensure public safety.

Authorities have urged hikers and visitors to avoid these areas until the fire has been fully extinguished and it is deemed safe to return.

Potential Threat to Table Mountain

While there is currently no immediate threat to structures or homes, there is concern that strong winds or shifting weather conditions could cause the fire to spread towards Table Mountain National Park.

Fire officials are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to deploy additional resources if necessary.

Warnings to the Public

SANParks has also issued a warning to the public, urging them to stay away from the affected areas and to report any new fire outbreaks immediately.

Residents and visitors are advised to remain vigilant and to follow all safety instructions issued by fire authorities.

Ongoing Fire Risks in Cape Town

Cape Town is known for its hot and dry conditions during the summer months, which often lead to wildfires. The city has seen several fires in recent years, some of which have caused significant damage to homes, wildlife, and natural vegetation.

Authorities continue to urge caution, as even a small spark can lead to a devastating wildfire.

Conclusion

Firefighters are working around the clock to contain the fire above Kirstenbosch, and aerial resources have been deployed to assist in the challenging terrain.

While there is currently no risk to structures, authorities are taking every precaution to prevent the fire from spreading further.

Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from closed trails and to report any new fire outbreaks immediately. The situation remains under close monitoring, and updates will be provided as firefighting efforts continue.
