The Role of a Senior Investment Officer
The Senior Investment Officer will play a pivotal role in managing one of the IFC’s regional hubs. This position will involve significant responsibilities in developing the PPP business in the designated sub-region, which may encompass various countries in West Africa, North Africa, Eastern Africa, or Southern Africa. The SIO will be expected to leverage extensive market and industry experience to foster growth and innovation in infrastructure projects across sectors such as electricity, water, transportation, telecommunications, and social services.
Responsibilities and Duties
The SIO will oversee a range of critical tasks, including:
- Business Development and Market Engagement: The SIO will lead business development initiatives within the hub, establishing and nurturing relationships with government clients and stakeholders. They will spearhead marketing activities, identify opportunities aligned with country strategies, and supervise the preparation of competitive commercial proposals.
- Transaction Management: The role requires active engagement in managing the full lifecycle of PPP project transactions. From initial feasibility assessments and project scoping to overseeing bidding processes and negotiating terms, the SIO will be an integral part of the transaction framework.
- Team Leadership: As a Hub Leader, the SIO will manage and mentor a team of professionals, providing guidance and support in the execution of advisory mandates. The SIO will also ensure that projects adhere to the highest standards of quality and sustainability, promoting teamwork and collaborative problem-solving.
- Cross-Collaboration: The SIO will collaborate closely with other hub leaders within Africa and liaise with diverse teams across the World Bank Group to foster synergies and enhance the delivery of services. By partnering with experts in various sectors, the SIO will ensure comprehensive solutions that address the multifaceted challenges of the infrastructure landscape.
- Innovative Solutions and Advisory Services: The SIO will be responsible for devising innovative project structures that provide practical solutions tailored to the unique needs of clients. This may involve restructuring state-owned enterprises or advising on corporate finance transactions, including mergers and acquisitions.
Required Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for the role of Senior Investment Officer, candidates must meet the following criteria:
- Educational Background: A Master of Business Administration (MBA) or a postgraduate degree in business, finance, or economics is required.
- Professional Experience: A minimum of 12 years of relevant experience in PPP transaction advisory, investment banking, project finance, or corporate finance is essential, with a proven track record in advising on infrastructure transactions.
- Regional Expertise: Experience working within the African context is highly desirable, particularly in developing relationships with governmental entities and private investors.
- Interpersonal Skills: Candidates should possess strong leadership capabilities, complemented by interpersonal skills that foster open communication and collaboration across culturally diverse teams.
- Analytical Competence: Proficiency in analytical tasks, financial modeling, and risk assessment related to PPP projects is necessary to navigate the complexities of the infrastructure sector.
Language Proficiency
Language proficiency is crucial for candidates applying to specific locations:
- Cairo: Proficiency in English and French or Arabic is required.
- Nairobi: Proficiency in English is required; French is preferred.
- Dakar/Abidjan: Proficiency in English and French is required.
- Johannesburg: Proficiency in English is required; Portuguese is preferred.
