Severe thunderstorm warning issued for KwaZulu-Natal

The South African Weather Service (Saws) has issued a Yellow Level warning for severe thunderstorms across most parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Sunday. The warning comes as the province braces for damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail, and heavy downpours, which could lead to localized flooding and infrastructure damage.

According to Saws, the thunderstorms are expected to make landfall from 12 p.m. on Sunday and continue into the night, posing a significant risk to residents, motorists, and infrastructure.

“Severe thunderstorms with damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail, and heavy downpours leading to localized flooding are expected over most parts of KZN, except for the north-eastern and extreme north-western parts,” the weather service stated.

Public Cautioned Against Dangerous Conditions

Authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions as the severe weather could create hazardous conditions on roads and low-lying areas.

Saws specifically warned against traveling on bridges and roads in flood-prone areas, as these may become impassable due to rising water levels or even develop sinkholes.

“We advise the public to avoid traveling on bridges and roads in low-lying areas, as these may be susceptible to flooding, and there may be sinkholes,” the weather service said.

In addition to flooding risks, lightning, hail, and strong winds may pose threats to both people and property. The public has been urged to avoid outdoor activities during the storm to minimize the risk of injury or death.

“If possible, stay indoors, well clear of windows, shelter pets, and cover vehicles. Move livestock and cars to safe sheltered areas, as there may be flying debris,” Saws advised.

eThekwini Municipality Issues Safety Guidelines

In response to the weather warning, eThekwini Municipality has called on residents to exercise extreme caution and follow official updates. The municipality warned that severe thunderstorms could result in:

• Poor driving conditions due to wet and slippery roads.

• Damage to infrastructure and vehicles from strong winds and hail.

• Injuries caused by flying debris or collapsing structures.

• Power surges due to excessive lightning.

• Destruction of mud-based houses in vulnerable areas.

Motorists, in particular, have been urged to maintain a safe following distance and avoid unnecessary travel, especially near bridges or roads prone to flooding.

“Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and maintain a safe following distance while driving on wet roads. Avoid traveling on bridges and roads, as these may be vulnerable to flooding, and there could be sinkholes,” the municipality stated.

The eThekwini Disaster Management Unit and other emergency response teams are on high alert and monitoring the weather closely. Residents are encouraged to stay informed by listening to local radio broadcasts and following official social media platforms for real-time updates.
