In 2024, South Africans mourned the loss of several beloved celebrities who had made a name for themselves and greatly impacted the entertainment industry.

From award-winning artists to seasoned journalists to esteemed thespians, here is a list of prominent local figures the nation lost in 2024

SOUTH AFRICAN CELEBRITIES WHO DIED IN 2024

However, The South African did a rundown of the celebrity deaths that shook the country to the core in 2024.

Dingaan Thobela

Earlier this year, tributes poured out for The Rose of Soweto after the three-time boxing champion passed away after an illness. News of his death was confirmed on 29 April.

Mpho Sebeng

Social media was flooded with messages of condolences after Mpho Sebeng’s family and close friends confirmed the news of his untimely death.

The fan-favourite actor best known for his on-screen character on Savage and Beauty tragically lost his life in a car accident in Potchefstroom on 5 May.

Malome Vector

On 24 July, the media confirmed the news of the horrific death of Malome Vector – a fast-rising rapper who died in a fatal car crash that also claimed the lives of celebrities Lizwi Wokuqala and Musa Damos Nkodo.

Connie Chiume

    Multi-award-winning actress Connie Chiume’s death sent shockwaves across the globe. The seasoned actress passed away at the Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg on Tuesday, 6 August.

    Zanele Mbokazi

    With South Africa yet to come to terms with the untimely death of seasoned actress Connie Chiume, on 12 August, media outlets confirmed the passing of famed Ukhozi FM presenter Zanele Mbokazi.

    The star celebrity died aged 52. The celebrated radio host lost her battle with lung cancer barely three months after being diagnosed.

    Thabiso Sikwane

    Celebrated broadcaster Thabiso Sikwane died on 31 August at the Helen Joseph Hospital in Auckland Park after a short illness.

    Mapaputsi

    Also on the list of South African celebrities who died in 2024 is Kwaito star Sandile Ngwenya, affectionately known as Mapaputsi. He died on 5 September after battling an illness.

    Darlington ‘Papa G’ Michael

    The former Isidingo star died on 13 September a few weeks after Mapaputsi death. The star died after being in and out of the hospital for a long time.

    Philani Mandlenkosi Mabanga

    Sadly, that same day, condolences were poured for Philani Mandlenkosi Mabanga. The later comedian and rapper passed away in his sleep on 13 September.

    Sello Motloung

    Two days after the Bra G and Mabanga’s death, another celebrity death shook South Africa. On 15 September, media outlets confirmed the passing of seasoned actor Sello Motloung. He died aged 53.

    Timmy Kwenulana

    Seasoned thespian Timmy Kwebulana died aged 83 on 19 September after a short illness.

    Willie Matlawa

    However, seasoned SABC presenter Willie Matlawa died on 29 September, just a year into her retirement.

    Solly Moholo

    Veteran South African gospel artist Solomon Molokoane, popularly known as Solly Moholo, died on 2 October at 65.

    Tito Mboweni

    The “Duke of Makgobaskloof” died on 12 October 2024 at 65 from a short illness. His death significantly impacted his Twitter (X) followers.
