South African singer Yallunder dies at 30: A tribute to her legacy

In sad news for South Africans, singer Yallunder, who was loved by many, has passed away. Her untimely death shocked both fans and celebrities alike.

The details surrounding Yallunder’s death
According to IOL, Yallunder died on 13 March 2025 at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The Nyembezi family confirmed the news in a statement released on 14 March 2025 through Yallunder’s Instagram account.

The statement confirmed that the South African singer was struggling with an illness for several months. Her family didn’t reveal what she was suffering from. They described her kind character as they mourned her:

“Her [Yallunder’s] journey was one of unwavering strength, and even in her most vulnerable moments, she remained a beacon of love, kindness, and artistry. Losing her has left an unimaginable void in our hearts, but we take comfort in knowing that her music, her legacy, and the love she poured into the world will live on forever.”

Despite her health struggles, Yallunder’s career continued to flourish

Who was Yallunder?
Yallunder was born and raised in Bizana, Eastern Cape. She was born on 23 August 1994. The family’s statement talked about the many achievements the singer had.

In addition to being a singer and a songwriter, Yallunder was “a classically trained, cum laude graduate in vocal pedagogy, an artist whose talent was as undeniable as her passion for music.”

The beginning of her career
Before she became famous, Yallunder used to make covers for songs which attracted fans to her. In 2018, her covers left an impact, which led to Sjava noticing her. Sjava has then signed Yallunder to his record label, 1020 Cartel.

This record deal marked the beginning of Yallunder’s popularity as she was part of the iSambulo album. Her track Ndinovalo proved successful, with 1.2 million views on YouTube. The collaboration with Sjava was life changing, especially since he is known to be successful. He has previously celebrated Isibuko album surpassing 42 million streams.

Her first album
The South African singer’s first album, Uthando Lwam, was released in 2021. It launched her career into new heights as she became known in the house and dance genres.

It also marked her entry into the Afro-soul genre. Her unique voice and heartfelt lyrics solidified her status in the music industry. Her album reached number eight on the iTunes chart and number 39 on the Apple Music chart. This is according to Top Charts.

Yallunder then collaborated with several DJs and producers. IOL named some of the prominent figures Yallunder collaborated with. They included Lemon & Herb, Kabza De Small, Oskido, Morda, Kelvin Momo and Heavy K.

Celebrities and fans alike have reacted to the unfortunate death. Oskido took to his Instagram account to mourn the late singer.

“Rest in Peace @yallunder_ I am deeply saddened by the passing of Yallunder, a young and incredibly talented vocalist I had the honor of working with. Her voice, passion, and artistry will forever be remembered. My heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and everyone whose lives she touched. May her soul rest in eternal peace,” he wrote.
Busiswa has also reacted to the news under Oskido’s post. She wrote: “Oh man, this Queen sang songs of LIFE. NDINOVALO is my current anthem & inspiration to keep going even though I’m afraid. This passing is very Sad. Thank you for introducing her to so many of us in song @oskidoibelieve.”

It is clear that Yallunder’s music has impacted Busiswa’s life as she was thankful for Oskido introducing her to many.

Another celebrity who reacted to the news was Daliwonga who wrote in a comment: “oh man this hurts so much. Rest in peace mama”
