Stolen McLaren at centre of criminal spree busted in Cape Town
Cape Town MayCo member for Safety and Security JP Smith has confirmed that a McLaren has been confiscated.
Taking to social media, Smith joked that Cape Tonians shouldn’t confuse the vehicle’s police escort for a VIP
“If you see this McLaren around the Deep South this evening under police escort, it’s not a VIP. The luxury sports car is on its way to the pound…Earlier this afternoon, members received word this vehicle had been previously implicated in a crime originating out of Boksburg, in Gauteng.” JP Smith
McLaren was apprehended in Cape Town
Smith went on to explain that the luxury car had been spotted on Kommetjie road with numerous enforcement vehicles blocking off any chance of escape, successfully bringing the Mclaren to a halt.
“On Tuesday afternoon, a vehicle was ‘remote-jammed’ in the Kirstenhof area and the suspect’s vehicle was identified and circulated. Traffic officers in the area quickly located the vehicle in Muizenberg and tactically brought the suspects to a stop, further preventing any of the passengers from fleeing.” JP Smith
With the suspects safely in custody, it quickly became apparent that the case ran deeper than a simple hijacking in Cape Town.
Suspects wanted in numerous provinces
The Democratic Alliance politician revealed that a search of the vehicle would provide new evidence in this unusual case.
“Inside the vehicle, the stolen laptop was recovered, along with several remote key fobs and remote jamming devices. Four suspects were taken into custody, but were also found to be wanted on a Tableview criminal case from earlier this month, as well as several other cases from Eastern Cape and Port Elizabeth.” JP Smith
Additionally, the McLaren had been fitted with false number plates, strategically installed over the vehicle’s original plates. Interestingly, Smith also confirmed that the vehicle had been on the police’s radar for some time.
“Again on Wednesday, members received information that a vehicle stolen previously in Delft, during December, had been seen in Constantia. Traffic officers from Muizenberg met up with private security in the area, and approached the now parked vehicle.” JP Smith
The driver initially protested before handing over his license, which was also found to be fake in addition to the vehicle being stolen.
Do you think picking such an eye-catching vehicle was the smartest move?
