Cardi B, the Grammy-winning rapper, and Tasha K, a YouTube personality known for celebrity gossip, have settled a prolonged legal battle.

After losing the defamation lawsuit in 2019, Tasha K was ordered to pay Cardi B $1.2 million (R22 062 706.80) in damages. Facing financial difficulties, Tasha K filed for bankruptcy, leading to the establishment of a payment plan to fulfil her debt.

Tasha K will pay $1.2 million in damages to Cardi B over five years as part of a bankruptcy settlement. Instead of paying the full amount immediately, she has proposed a structured payment plan offering $222 000 (R4 081 707.70) every quarter for the next five years.

The defamation case stemmed from Tasha K’s false claims about Cardi B’s health and personal life, which the rapper argued harmed her reputation and emotional well-being.

Court upholds ruling in Cardi B’s favour

After multiple court proceedings, the final ruling remained in Cardi B’s favour, enforcing the financial judgment against Tasha K.

Both parties have now agreed to a payment plan that allows Tasha K to settle her debt without facing immediate financial collapse.

Tasha K filed for bankruptcy due to financial difficulties, and the court determined that a structured payment plan was the most viable way forward.

This ensures that Cardi B will still receive compensation, even if it takes time.

The case unfolded in the US federal court system, with key proceedings in Georgia. Given Cardi B’s global influence, it attracted widespread media attention and sparked conversations about the responsibilities of online content creators.

Tasha K’s bankruptcy filing highlights the real-world impact of reckless social media behaviour, while Cardi B’s legal victory reinforces the importance of protecting one’s reputation.

This case is a cautionary tale for content creators, emphasising the potential repercussions of making defamatory statements online.

What impact will the bankruptcy ruling have on Tasha K’s ability to continue her content creation and online career?
