The highly publicised pre-trial hearing involving convicted rapist and murder accused Thabo Bester, his partner Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, and seven co-accused has been postponed once again—this time to 19 September 2025. Initially scheduled for 21 July, the Bloemfontein High Court delayed proceedings due to unresolved legal representation issues, further drawing out a case that has captured national and international attention.
Thabo Bester Case Delayed as Legal Issues Stall Proceedings
Thabo Bester, widely dubbed the “Facebook Rapist,” faces a string of charges alongside his co-accused. These include fraud, corruption, aiding an escape, defeating the ends of justice, and violating a corpse—the latter linked to his elaborate 2022 prison break from the Mangaung Correctional Centre.

Bester and Magudumana were dramatically arrested in Tanzania in April 2023 after weeks on the run. Their escape and subsequent international capture exposed critical flaws in South Africa’s correctional system and prompted a national outcry.

The couple’s criminal saga began when Thabo Bester faked his death in a prison fire, allegedly with the help of insiders. It was later discovered that the charred body found in his cell belonged to an unidentified man, prompting further investigations into the role of prison staff and external collaborators.
Co-Accused and Legal Hurdles
The postponement is largely due to unresolved legal representation for one of the accused—Zolile Sekeleni, Magudumana’s father. Sekeleni is currently appealing Legal Aid South Africa’s decision to deny him representation. Despite the appeal, Judge Lani Opperman made it clear in court that the matter will proceed with or without his legal counsel, placing pressure on him to secure alternative representation before the new court date.
Currently, Thabo Bester, Magudumana, and fellow accused Zando Moyo remain behind bars, while the other five co-accused have been released on bail. Among those out on bail are individuals previously employed by G4S, the private security company responsible for managing Mangaung Correctional Centre at the time of Bester’s escape.
In a surprising development during Tuesday’s court proceedings, charges against accused number five—a former G4S employee—were withdrawn. No formal reasons were given in open court for this withdrawal, but the decision is expected to raise questions about the strength of the case against some of the accused.
Judge Opperman addressed the court, saying:
“The matter is then postponed to the 19th of September 2025 again here at the high court in Bloemfontein and that is for a case management hearing.”
This statement indicates that the case is still in its pre-trial phase and further procedural matters need to be settled before the official trial can commence.
Public Interest and Legal Complexities
The Thabo Bester case continues to generate intense public scrutiny due to its complex web of charges, high-profile suspects, and implications for South Africa’s justice and prison systems. Bester’s daring escape, aided by individuals both inside and outside prison walls, has become a symbol of corruption and failure in correctional oversight.
Adding to the intrigue is Thabo Bester’s romantic and alleged criminal partnership with Dr. Nandipha Magudumana, a respected medical professional turned fugitive. Her fall from grace, arrest in a foreign country, and current incarceration have captured national media attention and sparked heated debates about love, manipulation, and complicity.
Legal analysts note that the delays, while frustrating, may be necessary to ensure all accused are fairly represented. However, critics argue that the repeated postponements are drawing out a case that should be moving more swiftly given its serious nature and impact on public trust.
With the next pre-trial hearing now set for 19 September 2025, the public will have to wait once more to see how the legal proceedings unfold. All eyes remain on the Bloemfontein High Court as South Africans—and the world—anticipate whether justice will be served in one of the country’s most sensational criminal cases in recent years.
As it stands, Thabo Bester, Magudumana, and the remaining accused are still facing serious charges with potentially life-altering consequences. The upcoming hearing is expected to lay the groundwork for a full trial, setting the stage for what promises to be a landmark case in South African legal history.
