The Competition Commission is seeking to recruit dynamic, hard-working and committed individuals to fill the positions of Junior Analyst in the Market Inquiry Division.
Job Description
Applicants should be organised, thorough and enjoy challenging situations. Attention to detail, ensuring quality and standards are met and keeping errors to a minimum are important factors in this position. Researching and gathering facts are an important part of the job. The successful individuals will participate in economic/ legal research and analysis in line with the Commission’s mandate.
A starting annual total cost to company package of R 885 350.58 (negotiable commensurate with experience)
Please note this position is available on a five-year fixed term contract, renewable.
The main responsibilities of the incumbent will, amongst others, include:
- Assist with the identification of competition issues to be assessed in a market inquiry.
- Assist in carrying out the investigative work required in a market inquiry, including the development of information requests and survey instruments to gather the required evidence, interviewing market participants and providing support during public hearings.
- Conduct research required in a market inquiry, including researching international best practices and jurisdictional approaches to similar issues as those raised in the market inquiry.
- Assist with economic / legal analysis of the evidence gathered through the market inquiry process, including the use of statical tools in that analysis.
- Drawing robust analytical conclusions from the economic/ legal analysis undertaken and reporting these to the Senior/ Principal Analyst and the Inquiry Panel.
- Reporting to the Senior/ Principal Analyst on the progress and outcomes of the research, including the economic underpinnings of competition issues.
- Assist in the presentation of reports to the Divisional Manager, the Inquiry Panel and Commissioners for discussion and decision-making.
- Act as a representative of the Commission within the framework of the Competition Act when communicating with business, consumers, government agencies and other stakeholders.
- Assist in monitoring the implementation and compliance with the recommendations and remedial actions of a market inquiry.
Job Requirements
Skills and Experience
We are looking for a dynamic, hardworking and a committed individual who meets the following requirements:
- An Honours degree in Economics or LLB.
- A Masters’ degree in Economics or an LLM will be an added advantage.
- Strong research, analytical and writing skills are essential.
- Minimum of 2 years’ Economics or Legal experience; it would be adventitious if the experience is in economic regulation and/ or competition.
- Knowledge and understanding of the purpose and objectives of the Competition Act, the Competition Commission and the South African economy is highly recommended.
Other considerations:
- Practical work exposure to area of expertise will be further considered to balance against other requirements.

The Competition Commission is seeking to recruit dynamic, hard-working and committed individuals to fill the role of Case Manager in the Market Inquiry Division. The successful candidate will be required to interact with diverse stakeholders face-to-face, over the telephone or by email. The candidate is expected to be well-organised, efficient and have excellent project management skills.
Job Description
The ability to organise and maintain case files, to monitor timelines and budget, and knowledge of registry systems, integrated reporting, risk and audit management are critical skills for this role. The successful candidate will also be required to draft and/ or review legal documents, such as the market inquiry notices, to ensure adherence to all legal requirements.
A starting annual total cost to company package of R 1 227, 388.98 (negotiable commensurate with experience)

Key Accountabilities
The main responsibilities of the incumbent will, amongst others, include:
- Managing the record of a market inquiry, including the use of the Case Management System.
- Dealing with all administrative queries from stakeholders, including confidentiality claims and requests for access to confidential information.
- Tracking of correspondence between the Commission and external parties, making follow ups, etc.
- Facilitating smooth public hearings by managing logistics and the involvement of different stakeholders.
- Ensure the publication of relevant communications and documents, including the Inquiry reports and notices.
- Monitor adherence to the timelines of the market inquiry.
- Represent the Inquiry in interdivisional and external arenas.
- Liaise with the Commission’s Communications team on matters relating to the Inquiry.
- Assist with the management of budget allocated to the Market Inquiry Division.
- Participate in organisational and inter-divisional activities within the Commission, including briefing Legal Counsel on matters related to market inquiries.
- Actively participate in strategic planning sessions and sub-committees within the Market Inquiry Division.

- An LLB degree or equivalent legal qualification.
- Knowledge of the Competition Act 89 of 1998 is essential.
- Working experience of 6 – 8 years in Competition Law or Economics is strongly recommended.
