The Zimbabwean ‘dangerous’ fugitive rearrested: What crimes did he commit in SA?
In a dramatic turn of events, Lovemore Musoyi, a 32-year-old Zimbabwean national described as “dangerous” by authorities, has been rearrested after months on the run.
Law enforcement apprehended Musoyi on 3 January 2025, in the rugged mountains of the Rakgoadi policing area in Limpopo’s Sekhukhune District. The South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed the arrest, ending an intense manhunt.
Musoyi escaped police custody on 1 January 2023, during a transfer to Witbank Correctional Services. The fugitive attacked and disarmed two officers at Moutse Mall in Dennilton before fleeing with two other suspects.
While police soon recaptured his accomplices, Musoyi evaded capture for over a year, allegedly committing a string of heinous crimes during that time.
What Crimes did Lovemore Musoyi Commit?
More than ten criminal cases, including murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, house and business robberies, kidnapping, assault, and stock theft, are linked to Lovemore Musoyi. Among the charges are the possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. His alleged activities have terrorized communities in Elandskraal, Motetema, Dennilton, and Rakgoadi.
As reported by IOL, Colonel Malesela Ledwaba detailed some of Musoyi’s recent crimes, including a vicious attack on June 20, 2024.
“At approximately 7:45 PM, Musoyi and his accomplices carried out a brazen business robbery at a tuck shop in Mafisheng village,” Ledwaba said. “During the robbery, Musoyi accused a male victim of betrayal and brutally assaulted him with an axe before looting the shop of money and soft drinks.”
Another chilling incident occurred on February 2, 2024, when Musoyi stormed his ex-girlfriend’s residence. Following an altercation, he allegedly shot her brother in the mouth before fleeing the scene with a television set.
Communities in fear
Musoyi’s criminal activities have instilled fear in communities across the Sekhukhune District. The provincial police commissioner in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has assured residents that Musoyi’s arrest was a top priority. “A team of specialised detectives has worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of our communities and bring Musoyi to justice,” said Hadebe.
In August 2024, Limpopo police launched a manhunt for a ‘notorious’ wanted suspect, offering a R20,000 reward for information leading to their arrest and successful conviction.
