Mamelodi Sundowns manager Miguel Cardoso is reportedly ready to release as many as fifteen players.

The Brazilians have around forty first-team players, making player management and the ability to give everyone playing time complex for the Portuguese tactician.

Themba Zwane, whose contract runs out in June, is a player rumoured to be getting the axe, which has understandably piqued Kaizer Chiefs’ interest.

Chiefs want Zwane?

“Kaizer Chiefs could be watching the situation of a Mamelodi Sundowns star with an interested eye,” KickOff reported.

“This as has been the Soweto giants’ tradition with out-of-contract players at Chloorkop in recent years. Even though Chiefs appeared not to have planned it, it came as no surprise when they signed Gaston Sirino. This after his contract lapsed at Sundowns at the end of June 2024.

“Amakhosi may also not be able to resist the temptation of having the opportunity to sign Themba Zwane, whose contract is left with only five months. With Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos still rating the 35-year-old, it would not be a shock for Chiefs to lure the Tembisa-born man to Naturena.

“He would be following in the footsteps of the likes of Josta Dladla, Katlego Mphela, Leonardo Castro, Khama Billiat, Ramahlwe Mphahlele, and recently Sirino, who all joined Chiefs from Sundowns as free agents.”

Cardoso wants to cut squad

“The coach has expressed his desire to cut down the squad to 25 players or at most 30 if the club wants a big squad,” a Siya source confirmed.

“He feels that 40 players is just too much to control and satisfy all the player despite the many games they are playing. He believes that 25 infield players with at least three or four goalkeepers is the best squad where rotation won’t be a big problem,” the added.

“Apparently he believes that’s like having three strong teams instead of the 40 they have now which is like having four teams. So, by the look of things, the Sporting Director and management are agreeing on that,

“So, Sundowns will be looking at having a good, sizeable squad.”

What other Sundowns player should Kaizer Chiefs be eyeing?
