Supposedly, Mark Twain once said, “If you don’t read the newspaper you are uninformed, if you do read the newspaper you are misinformed.”

Except, Mark Twain didn’t say it.

According to Snopes, that quote has been misattributed. They cite Quote Investigator, Garson O’Toole who apparently found no proof this quote came from Twain.

O’Toole did however find a variation of the statement in a letter by Thomas Jefferson from 1807: “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them; he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”

Of course, that doesn’t mean Snopes is a totally reliable source either.

So, who is…?

MSM: WEAPONS OF MASS DISTRACTION & DISINFORMATION

Well, it’s not the Western MSM, that’s for damn sure. Their job is to do one thing and one thing only; manufacture public consent for the next war.

In fact, if you’ve been following nothing but Western, “liberal”, MSM all your life, chances are you’re probably not just misinformed or uninformed, you’re probably downright propagandized and brainwashed by now.

However, if you’re interested in snapping out of it and exploring the counter-narrative for once, here are a few popular, credible sites you might want to check out…

RT (RUSSIA TODAY)

If you live in the US, UK, Europe or Africa, chances are you no longer have access to RT, because the broadcast feed was cut by the West when Russia’s SMO in Ukraine began. Around the same time, the channel was removed from YouTube, and banned by Meta from Facebook and Instagram in September last year.

Fortunately, you can still find them online. However, if you live in the UK, France or Germany, where people are getting arrested for social media posts, you may want to use a VPN – lest you get a visit from the cops for watching a “taboo” news channel.

CROSSTALK, GOING UNDERGROUND & RT DOCS

In addition to RT’s live news bulletin, you can find several commentary shows on their site. Most notable among them, for hard, straightforward, current affairs and geopolitical analysis, is CROSSTALK, hosted by journo and analyst Peter Lavelle, and GOING UNDERGROUND, hosted by award-winning journalist Afshin Rattansi. Both shows regularly feature a wide variety of expert guests.

You’ll also find a substantial library of well-made, informative documentaries on RT’s site.

CONSORTIUM NEWS

CN is a Washington-based Consortium for Independent Journalism founded in 1995 by the late, internationally renowned and respected investigative journo, Robert Parry. It was the first independent news site in the US based on the web, covering content not found in corporate media.

MINTPRESS NEWS

MPN was founded in 2012 by award-winning journalist and editor Mnar Adley Muhawesh – a recipient of the Women’s Institute for the Freedom of the Press Award and the Serena Shim Award for independent journalism.

MPN calls what they do “independent watchdog journalism“. They’re on a mission to expose imperialism, corporatocracy and threats to our civil liberties, with “original reporting, in-depth investigations and thoughtful analysis of the most pressing topics.”

THE RON PAUL INSTITUTE

The Ron Paul Institute for Peace and Prosperity is a project by US author, activist, politician and three-time presidential candidate, Dr. Ron Paul.

The institute was set up as part of his educational organisation, the Foundation for Rational Economics and Education (F.R.E.E.) founded in the 1970s, and expands on Dr. Paul’s lifetime of advocacy for a peaceful US foreign policy and the protection of civil liberties.

GLOBAL RESEARCH

The Centre for Research on Globalisation (CRG) is a non-profit, independent, research and media org that publishes news articles, commentary, research and analysis on a broad range of social, strategic and environmental topics. The Centre also serves as a think tank on crucial economic and geopolitical issues.

The GR website was established in Montreal on 9 September 2001, two days before 9/11, by Canadian economist and author Professor Michel Chossudovsky. Since its founding, the Centre has accumulated an extensive archive of material on issues barely covered by mainstream media.

THE GRAYZONE

Founded and edited in 2015 by award-winning journalist and author Max Blumenthal, The Grayzone is an independent news website dedicated to original investigative journalism and analysis on politics and empire. Blumenthal has penned several books, including best-selling Republican Gomorrah, Goliath and The Management of Savagery. He has also produced several documentaries, including Killing Gaza.

Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Oliver Stone called GZ “an honest, investigative news site…a thinking person’s arena.”

The late, renowned, journalist and filmmaker, John Pilger said of the site; “The excellent reporting of Blumenthal and his colleagues is real, and not Vichy journalism. The Grayzone provides a rare counter to propaganda.”

JUDGE ANDREW NAPOLITANO

If I could recommend only one analyst-commentator to anyone, it would be the Judge.

In his own words, Judge Napolitano presents “hard-hitting legal/political news from a man who knows and respects the Constitution – and the importance of defending individual freedoms.”

Napolitano is nationally known for “watching and reporting on the US government as it takes liberty and property.” He is the author of nine books on the U.S. Constitution, two of which have been New York Times Best Sellers.

Some of the Judge’s regular guests include experts like ex-Intelligence Officer, Scott Ritter, military analyst, Douglas Mc Gregor, ex-CIA analysts Ray Mc Govern and Larry Johnson, political scientist Professor John Mearsheimer and economist/analyst Professor Jeffrey Sachs.

GEORGE GALLOWAY (MOATS)

Scottish-born politician and ex-Labour Party MP, George Galloway has been writing columns and making radio and TV programs for over thirty years. He has written for the Spectator, the Sunday Times, the Guardian, the Independent, the Daily Express, the Daily Record, the Morning Star and many others.

Galloway was expelled from Labour by Tony Blair in 2003 over his opposition to the Iraq War. In March 2024 he was again elected to Westminster, this time as the Workers Party MP for Rochdale.

On his channel, the Mother of All Talk Shows (MOATS), he presents “straight talking, straight forward” political, media and current affairs analysis with a wide range of expert guests.

THE DURAN

Founded by controversial former Barrister, journalist, and author Alexander Mercouris, The Duran is a news-media platform “that advances a realpolitik position and focuses on a pragmatic analysis of stories in the news.”

Mercouris, known for his insightful commentary on global politics and economics, has stirred up debate and controversy – particularly on matters relating to Russia. Along with his colleague, geopolitical analyst Alex Christoforou, Mercouris presents in-depth news, media and political analysis.

ZERO HEDGE

According to their manifesto, ZH specialises in financial journalism and their mission is to “widen the scope of financial, economic and political information available to the professional investing public. They also endeavour to “liberate oppressed knowledge, provide analysis uninhibited by political constraint and facilitate information’s unending quest for freedom.”

ZH writers use anonymity “as a shield from the tyranny of the majority, to protect unpopular individuals from retaliation – and their ideas from suppression – at the hand of an intolerant society.”

ANTIWAR.COM

This site is “opposed to interventionism and imperialism.” Their libertarian politics and opposition to war are rooted in Randolph Bourne’s concept that “War is the health of the State.” Their Editorial Director, Scott Horton, is the author of Provoked: How Washington Started the Catastrophe in Ukraine.

Antiwar claims they are “already fighting the next information war, and are not going to allow the leaders and war hawks to get away with it, unopposed and unchallenged.”

RICHARD MEDHURST

Richard Medhurst is an independent journalist from the UK whose work focuses on US politics, international relations and the Middle East.

The son of Nobel Prize-winning UN peacekeepers, Medhurst covered the trial of Julian Assange and the Iran nuclear deal talks. His reports and analysis on Yemen, Ukraine, Syria, Lebanon, Iran and the Israeli genocide in Gaza have gone viral countless times.

Unfortunately, he and his work are under threat as he was just arrested by the authorities – for the second time – for his criticism of Israel.

REDACTED

Hosted by husband and wife journos, Clayton Morris (ex-Fox News) and Natali (ex-MSNBC), Redacted is (in their words) “a concerted effort to save the truth, preserve information, and fight propaganda.”

Through their show, the couple “takes an in-depth look at news the mainstream media largely ignores”, exploring various legal, social, financial and political issues “that matter”.

Clayton and Natali are committed to “setting the record straight”, bringing the public “the stories nobody else tells, along with the facts that complete the picture.”

And that’s just the alt-news shortlist…

There’s still Danny Haiphong, Dialogue Works, Kim Iversen, Caitlin Johnstone, Gerald Celente, Lionel Nation, Lee Camp, Jimmy Dore, Russell Brand, Due Dissidence…to name a few more.

You’ll find them here and here.
