A tragic accident claimed the lives of two dispatch riders in Lagos on Sunday after a 20-foot container fell on them during a collision involving two fully loaded Mack trucks on the busy Eko Bridge, inward Alaka. The incident, which unfolded during early traffic hours, has once again drawn attention to the persistent dangers faced on major Lagos highways.

According to an official statement released by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the fatal crash was primarily caused by over-speeding. The agency noted that preliminary investigations point to reckless driving, with reports indicating that one of the truck drivers may have fallen asleep behind the wheel.

The victims, identified by their vehicle registration numbers T-10357 LA and KJA 107 XM, were riding along the Eko Bridge axis when the tragic accident occurred. LASTMA spokesperson Adebayo Taofiq provided a detailed breakdown of the events that led to the fatal outcome.

Preliminary findings suggest that the driver of one of the articulated trucks, reportedly driving at an excessive speed while allegedly dozing off, lost control of the vehicle,” Taofiq stated.

He added that the truck veered off course and crashed into another fully loaded truck ahead of it. The force of the impact dislodged a 20-foot container, which tragically landed on the two dispatch riders who were navigating the same route at that moment. Both victims were confirmed dead at the scene,” Taofiq said.

The accident scene quickly drew the attention of LASTMA officials who were monitoring traffic under the Eko Bridge. Officers rushed to the site, where they managed to rescue a severely injured truck driver who was then transported to a nearby hospital using a Lagos State Government ambulance.

In the aftermath of the collision, both truck drivers fled the scene, likely out of fear of arrest and legal repercussions. LASTMA confirmed that an active investigation is now underway to identify and apprehend the fleeing individuals. Authorities are working with other state agencies and reviewing traffic surveillance footage to assist in the manhunt.

To mitigate the resulting congestion and ensure public safety, LASTMA officials cordoned off the accident area and redirected traffic through the Coastain Roundabout. The intervention helped prevent further incidents and ensured that emergency services could operate without obstruction.

Speaking on behalf of the agency, LASTMA General Manager Bakare-Oki expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the grieving families.

We sympathize with the families affected by this tragic incident. It is a painful reminder of the urgent need for all drivers, especially those operating articulated vehicles, to adhere to safety regulations,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He emphasized the importance of responsible driving and urged motorists to remain alert, avoid fatigue, and ensure their vehicles are in proper condition before taking to the roads — particularly on high-speed routes like Eko Bridge.

Calls for Stricter Trucking Regulations in Lagos

This tragic incident adds to a growing list of road accidents involving heavy-duty trucks across Lagos, raising serious questions about regulatory enforcement, driver training, and vehicle inspection standards. While Lagos remains a vital hub for commerce and logistics in Nigeria, road safety often takes a back seat in the rush to meet delivery timelines.

Experts and civil society groups have repeatedly called for stricter measures, including mandatory rest periods for long-haul drivers, GPS tracking, and routine drug testing to curb the dangers associated with fatigue and impaired driving.

In densely populated cities like Lagos, where dispatch riders have become an essential part of urban logistics and e-commerce, their vulnerability to accidents underscores a broader problem with traffic management and infrastructural limitations.

The Eko Bridge accident that claimed the lives of two dispatch riders is a sobering reminder of the risks faced daily by road users in Lagos. As authorities continue their investigation and search for the fleeing truck drivers, many are urging the government to take stronger action to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

For a city as dynamic and densely populated as Lagos, ensuring road safety must remain a top priority—not just through enforcement but through systemic change in how commercial transportation is regulated.
