Train operations have resumed on the Central Line following a disruptive crash at a level crossing near Philippi Station on Wednesday morning. The incident, which occurred shortly before 8:00 a.m., involved a commuter train colliding with a vehicle that had entered the railway crossing despite safety warnings.

According to officials from the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA), the vehicle was struck as it attempted to cross the tracks, ignoring an approaching train and audible warning signals. Zino Mihi, spokesperson for PRASA, provided details of the incident. “Reports from the train crew indicate that the train driver observed a vehicle approaching the level crossing and immediately sounded the warning haul,” said Mihi. “Despite this, the vehicle proceeded onto the crossing, which led to the collision.”

The impact resulted in significant damage to the vehicle and minor disruption to it, which had to stop for safety inspections before being cleared for movement. Emergency services and PRASA response teams were dispatched to the scene promptly to manage the situation and ensure safety protocols were followed.

Train Operations Suspended Temporarily, Now Restored
