Tshwane & national govt seeking funds to expand Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant
Efforts to secure funding for the expansion of the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Plant in Tshwane are gaining momentum. Tshwane Mayor Nasiphi Moya, during a site visit on Thursday, confirmed that both the city and the national government are actively working to secure the R4 billion needed for the project.
The expansion is aimed at increasing the plant’s capacity to treat larger volumes of water, addressing the growing needs of the Hammanskraal community.
Addressing Hammanskraal’s Water Crisis
The Rooiwaal Wastewater Treatment Plant, constructed in the 1970s, was initially designed to purify water before distribution to households in Hammanskraal. However, the township’s population has grown significantly over the decades, surpassing the plant’s current capacity.
As a result, the aging facility has struggled to meet the community’s water demands, prompting urgent calls for expansion and modernization.
Mayor Moya acknowledged the challenges posed by the outdated infrastructure, emphasizing the importance of the plant in addressing Hammanskraal’s water crisis.
“You would recall that when the president was here, he spoke of R4 billion that would be set aside for phase two. That’s how expensive that is,” Moya said. “What it talks to is increasing the capacity of this plant so that it accommodates the areas that are supposed to be fed here.”
Securing the Funds
The R4 billion required for the expansion represents a significant investment, underscoring the scale of the upgrades needed to modernize the plant. Moya explained that government officials are actively pursuing financing options to make the expansion a reality.
The plant’s expansion will involve increasing its capacity to handle larger sewage volumes, ultimately allowing it to provide clean and safe water to Hammanskraal residents.
Current Refurbishments
In the meantime, the city has initiated refurbishments at the plant, with completion expected by June next year. These upgrades are intended to improve the plant’s operational efficiency and serve as a precursor to the larger expansion project.
Moya noted that once the refurbishments are complete, the government will conduct evaluations to determine whether the water treated at the facility meets the standards for safe consumption in Hammanskraal.
A Long-Standing Issue
Hammanskraal’s water crisis has been a persistent problem, with residents often facing limited access to clean and safe water. The inadequacies of the Rooiwaal Wastewater Treatment Plant have been central to this issue, drawing widespread criticism and calls for intervention from community members and advocacy groups.
The announcement of the expansion project and ongoing refurbishments reflects the government’s recognition of the urgent need to address the township’s water challenges.
Long-Term Solutions
The expansion of the Rooiwaal plant is part of a broader strategy to ensure sustainable water infrastructure for the growing population in Hammanskraal and surrounding areas.
While securing funding for the expansion remains a key challenge, the city’s collaboration with the national government demonstrates a commitment to finding a long-term solution to the water crisis.
Looking Ahead
As the project moves forward, residents of Hammanskraal are hopeful that the expansion will bring relief and improve their quality of life.
However, the timeline for securing funding and completing the upgrades remains uncertain, emphasizing the importance of continued government accountability and transparency throughout the process.
With refurbishments set for completion by mid-2025 and plans for expansion in the works, the Rooiwaal Wastewater Treatment Plant symbolizes both the challenges and opportunities in addressing South Africa’s water infrastructure needs.
The outcome of this project will not only impact the residents of Hammanskraal but also serve as a benchmark for tackling similar issues in other parts of the country.
