The 2024/25 Betway Premiership season has passed its halfway mark – and there appears to be a two-way battle for bragging rights as the country’s top goal scorer.

Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns appear well on their way to retaining their title as South African champions.
Nearest challengers
After 18 matches, Masandawana boast 48 points after 16 wins and two defeats.
They are 12 points clear of nearest challengers Orlando Pirates, but have played three more matches.
Mamelodi Sundowns have scored a league-high 42 goals in their 18 games – at 2.3 per match.
Nearly half of those goals have come via two players – Lucas Ribeiro Costa and Iqraam Rayners.
Costa (10) and Rayners (9) have distanced themselves from the chasing pack, with three players currently on six goals apiece.
Orlando Pirates’ Tshegofatso Mabasa proved to be the deadliest striker in the country last season with 16 goals.
It’s highly unlikely that anyone will break – or come even close – the all-time PSL record of 25 goals held by Zambia’s Collins Mbesuma while playing for Kaizer Chiefs in the 2004/05 season.
