The Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) develops strategic guidance aligned with UNDP’s long-term vision, facilitating operational support to Country Offices and spearheading engagement across multi-stakeholder dialogues. The Nature, Climate, Energy, Waste, and Chemicals Hubs of BPPS aim to integrate essential environmental considerations into national policies and frameworks that address global challenges such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequality.

This role will significantly contribute to the implementation of the Nature Pledge, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at integrating nature into UNDP’s developmental framework, particularly focusing on gender equality and inclusion as dimensions of sustainability.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Nature and Gender Specialist will support the implementation of UNDP’s Nature Pledge, particularly in the Africa region with emphasis on the Sahel. The key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Provision of Strategic Guidance, Communication, and Advocacy

  • Provide technical expertise on the Nature Pledge and its associated system shifts: Value Shift, Economic and Finance Shift, and Policy and Practice Shift, with a specific emphasis on gender integration.
  • Develop and implement the Nature Pledge Regional Activation Plan for Africa, coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure effective deployment and engagement.
  • Advocate for the Nature Pledge objectives, enhancing understanding of its relevance to UNDP’s Gender Equality Strategy.

Building Strategic Partnerships and Resource Mobilization

  • Develop partnerships with various stakeholders, including governmental bodies, NGOs, women’s rights groups, and indigenous communities, fostering integrated action in nature-inclusive policies.
  • Support resource mobilization efforts to secure funding and resources for Nature Pledge initiatives within the region.

Technical Support for Country Offices

  • Manage and support initiatives like the Nature Pledge Localization in the Sahel, ensuring that country offices align their strategies with overall regional objectives.
  • Offer technical assistance to countries implementing the Nature Pledge and monitor progress on gender equality integration across the projects.

Facilitating Knowledge Sharing, Monitoring, and Reporting

  • Create mechanisms for knowledge sharing and best practice dissemination concerning nature-based solutions and gender equality.
  • Monitor and report on progress towards the objectives of the Nature Pledge, ensuring compliance with predefined targets and contributing to corporate reporting.

  • Educational Background:

  • Experience:
  • At least 5 years (Master’s degree) or 7 years (Bachelor’s degree) in relevant fields, particularly emphasizing project management, policy advising, and gender mainstreaming in environmental contexts.
  • Demonstrated expertise in program development and partnerships, particularly in African contexts is crucial.

Desired Skills:

  • Experience working specifically with Sahel countries is highly sought.
  • Proven track record in advocacy, project management, and environmental programming.
  • Familiarity with UNDP processes or similar international organizations can enhance candidacy.

Language Proficiency:

Fluent in both English and French is essential for effective communication and engagement within diverse stakeholders.
