Overview of the Internship

This internship is a flexible, project-based position that can span from one to six months, with placements available at UNESCO’s headquarters, field offices, and institutes worldwide. Open to external candidates aged 20 and above, applicants are encouraged to apply before the deadline of December 31, 2025.

Key Responsibilities and Learning Opportunities

The intern will work across various functions within the Sector for Priority Africa and External Relations, supporting activities that include:

• Drafting notes, memoranda, letters, and proposals for submission to member states and potential partners.
• Assisting in research and analysis to prepare briefings for bilateral meetings.
• Contributing to the coordination of UNESCO’s contributions to statutory meetings such as the General Conference and Executive Board, and assisting in report drafting.
• Managing inquiries from delegations, partners, and stakeholders, ensuring accurate and timely information exchange.
• Supporting the organization of meetings, events, and technical activities.
• Updating the PAX website on the intranet with relevant information related to member states, events, and publications.

Through these tasks, interns will gain invaluable insights into UNESCO’s diplomatic functions, international policy-making, and organizational operations.

What Will You Learn?

By the end of the internship, participants will have developed a comprehensive understanding of UNESCO’s mission, with a focus on Africa and external relations. They will learn about the organization’s role in setting global standards, facilitating cooperation among international bodies, and providing policy advice. Additionally, interns will enhance their soft skills, including stakeholder management, communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and adaptability—aligning with UNESCO’s competency framework.

Who Should Apply?

Applicants should be enrolled in a graduate program (Master’s, PhD, or equivalent) or have recently graduated within the last 12 months. Candidates must be at least 20 years old and possess excellent command of either English or French, with working knowledge of the other language considered an asset. Strong computer skills and the ability to work effectively within a multicultural, international environment are essential.

Candidates with experience in administrative or technical roles should be enrolled in relevant technical institutions or nearing graduation. A proactive, team-oriented attitude and strong interpersonal skills are highly valued.

Benefits and Important Notes

While UNESCO does not offer financial remuneration for interns, the program provides a unique opportunity to gain international experience and network with professionals worldwide. Interns are entitled to 2.5 days of leave per month during their internship.

Applicants should prepare their motivation letter and résumé in advance, as the application process is competitive and time-sensitive. The internship applications are accepted twice yearly—once in January and again in July—and successful candidates will be contacted directly by hiring managers.

Only applications submitted in English or French will be considered, and unofficial translations are recommended if documents are in other languages.
