Payment: The salary for this post is based on TVöD grade 13 (German public service pay scale,
starting at EUR 4,600 per month, exempt from local taxation, but not exempt from social
security contributions).
A flexible home office policy is in place (remote work for some days per week).

Background

UNESCO-UNEVOC is UNESCO’s designated centre for technical and vocational education and
training (TVET), which supports Member States in their efforts to strengthen and upgrade their
TVET systems. UNESCO-UNEVOC also manages the UNEVOC Network, a global network of TVET
institutions that work together to improve the standards and quality of TVET in their respective
countries and beyond. The activities of UNESCO-UNEVOC include capacity building, technical
advice, network peer learning, identification and dissemination of best practices and knowledge
management. To maximize the impact of its work, UNESCO-UNEVOC relies on effective
communication, including media outreach.

Roles and responsibilities

  • Under the direct supervision of the Head of UNESCO-UNEVOC and in close collaboration with
    other UNESCO-UNEVOC staff, the Communications Officer will perform the following functions:
  • Serve as UNESCO-UNEVOC’s communications focal point within UNESCO, UN Bonn and the
    wider UN community.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive communications strategy for UNESCO-UNEVOC, to
    increase visibility and impact and develop partnerships.
  • Develop and maintain editorial content for the website of UNESCO-UNEVOC and social media
    channels.

Design and execute communication campaigns to promote projects and initiatives, including
activities on international days and other events.

  • Write articles, media advisories, press releases, social media posts and other communication
    materials.
  • Draft and review speeches and presentations for staff of UNESCO-UNEVOC.
  • Coordinate the translation of online content and communication materials.
  • Oversee the production of publications, including coordinating submissions for the
    publication plan of UNESCO, reviewing and proofreading manuscripts according to UNESCO
    standards, managing translations, editing, design and layout.
  • Coordinate the creation of infographics, videos and other communication materials by third
    parties.
  • Support UNESCO-UNEVOC’s knowledge management products in close collaboration with the
    KMIT Officer.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of training programmes in collaboration with
    other UNESCO-UNEVOC staff.
  • Supervise interns and monitor their tasks and performance.
  • Submit an annual plan of activities and provide periodic progress reports.
  • Perform any other tasks that may be required to ensure the success of the team.
    Requirements
  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in communications, public relations,
    journalism, international relations, education or a related field.
  • A first-level university degree in the aforementioned fields, combined with two additional
    years of qualifying professional experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university
    degree.
  • At least four years of relevant experience, preferably in an international environment.
    Experience within the UN system is an advantage.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing communication strategies and content development.
  • Ability to work in a multicultural environment, including a strong sense of diplomacy and tact.
  • Excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
  • Excellent editorial skills.
  • Ability to rapidly analyze, synthesize and refine information.
  • Knowledge of another UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish) is an
    advantage.
