,Are you passionate about climate action, urban development, and empowering youth in vulnerable communities? UNICEF is offering a dynamic internship that provides a unique chance to contribute to transformative work at the intersection of environmental sustainability, youth engagement, and urban programming.

About UNICEF and Its Mission

UNICEF operates in some of the most challenging environments worldwide, striving to reach the most disadvantaged children. With a presence in over 190 countries and territories, the organization’s mission is to save lives, defend rights, and enable children to reach their full potential. Guided by the UNICEF Strategic Plan 2022–2025 and aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals, UNICEF works relentlessly to create a better future for every child — everywhere, every day.

Focus on Urban Challenges and Climate Resilience

Today, approximately 500 million children live in urban slums and informal settlements—an alarming figure expected to grow beyond 1 billion by 2050. These communities face overcrowding, unsafe housing, limited access to vital services, and exposure to environmental hazards. Climate change intensifies these vulnerabilities, with slums often situated on disaster-prone lands, increasing risks of floods, disease, and displacement. Despite these pressing issues, urban climate policies frequently overlook informal settlements, deepening inequality and risk for children living there.

Introducing Green Rising: UNICEF’s Youth-Led Climate Initiative

Green Rising is a flagship UNICEF Programme Group initiative designed to mobilize millions of young people to take meaningful climate and environmental action. It champions youth leadership in advocating for sustainable communities, developing green skills, and participating in volunteerism—placing young people at the heart of climate resilience efforts, especially in the most affected urban areas.

Internship Opportunity: Play a Key Role in Urban Climate Action

This internship offers an exceptional opportunity for graduate students to support the expansion of Green Rising into slums and informal settlements. Working closely with the Programme Group’s Director’s Office, interns will help shape one of UNICEF’s most innovative initiatives at the crossroads of climate action, youth engagement, and urban development.

What Will You Do?

Interns will contribute to the development and coordination of Green Rising’s urban strategy through activities such as:

  • Conducting research and documenting youth-led environmental initiatives in informal urban settings
  • Drafting briefs, internal updates, and communication materials for leadership and partners
  • Assisting in coordinating efforts across headquarters, regional, and country offices to identify pilot communities
  • Developing content for meetings, presentations, and webinars, including background notes and slide decks
  • Highlighting youth voices and success stories from slum communities to support storytelling and advocacy
  • Supporting knowledge management tasks, such as organizing resources and designing monitoring approaches tailored to informal urban contexts

Who Should Apply?

Ideal candidates are enrolled within the past year in a graduate program related to Economics, Social Sciences, Political Sciences, Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, or similar fields. Applicants should demonstrate:

  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication abilities
  • A keen interest in climate change, urban issues, youth empowerment, or social justice
  • Cultural sensitivity and experience working with diverse communities
  • Organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Creativity, initiative, and collaborative teamwork

Proficiency in English is required; additional languages like Spanish, French, or Arabic are advantageous.

Application Essentials

  • Proof of current or recent enrollment in a university program
  • Academic transcripts
  • Identification documentation
  • A recommendation letter
  • Proof of health insurance coverage for the internship duration

Why Join UNICEF?

The organization is committed to diversity and inclusion, fostering an environment where every individual can contribute meaningfully. Interns benefit from flexible work arrangements, comprehensive support, and the chance to make a tangible difference in addressing urban climate challenges and empowering youth.
