UNICEF’s Office of Innovation offers an exceptional opportunity for motivated individuals to join their team as Innovations Interns, working remotely from Stockholm, Sweden, for a period of 26 weeks. The team is composed of interdisciplinary experts dedicated to identifying, prototyping, and scaling technologies and practices that can create meaningful, scalable impact.

What Will the Intern Do?

Interns will gain hands-on experience by supporting a variety of activities within the Office of Innovation’s diverse portfolios. They will have the opportunity to contribute to projects aligned with their interests and skills, with a focus on the following thematic areas:

  • Humanitarian Innovation: Supporting the development and scaling of solutions that enhance humanitarian efforts, including remote tracking tools, digital feedback mechanisms, and energy access in conflict zones.
  • Climate, Energy, and Infrastructure: Contributing to projects that address climate-related shocks affecting children, such as air pollution, disaster preparedness, and circular economy initiatives.
  • Health Portfolio: Assisting in the development of innovations to improve maternal and child health, strengthen health systems, and expand access to essential services.
  • Monitoring, Evaluation, and Knowledge Management: Supporting data collection, visualization, and evidence generation to assess the impact of innovations.
  • Governance and Ecosystem Building: Helping coordinate organizational efforts to foster an enabling environment for innovation across UNICEF and its partners.
  • Upshift Program: Participating in a global youth empowerment initiative that equips young people with skills to develop real-world solutions to local challenges.
  • Design and Communication: Supporting user-centered design processes, research, and the creation of communication assets to showcase UNICEF’s innovative work.

What Will Interns Learn?

Participants will develop a multifaceted understanding of how innovation can transform development and humanitarian sectors. They will learn about emerging technologies, strategies for scaling solutions, and how to collaborate across sectors and cultures. Additionally, the internship emphasizes soft skills such as project management, stakeholder engagement, and effective communication—crucial for careers in global development.

Who Should Apply?

Ideal candidates are currently enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, or Ph.D. programs, preferably in fields such as health sciences, political science, environmental sciences, education, or related areas. Recent graduates within the past two years are also encouraged to apply. Applicants should demonstrate strong academic performance, familiarity with humanitarian and development contexts, and fluency in English. Knowledge of additional UN languages, such as French or Spanish, is considered an asset.

Eligibility and Conditions

  • Minimum age: 18 years
  • Ability to work remotely with reliable internet connection
  • Personal laptop required
  • No travel expected during the internship
  • Applicants must have valid health insurance coverage
  • Selected interns will receive a modest monthly stipend to support living expenses
  • Interns must arrange their own travel, visa, and accommodation
