Job Purpose:

As a General Worker or Gardener at UCT, you will be responsible for supporting the Gardens Supervisor in maintaining the university’s grounds. Your main tasks will include all aspects of horticulture and landscape maintenance to ensure the grounds remain beautiful and well-kept.

You will work as part of a team, with different groups of workers handling various tasks. For example, one team may be mowing the grass, while another might be planting new flowers or collecting litter. This means you’ll have the chance to work on a variety of projects, learning new skills along the way.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Mowing, weeding, and general lawn care
  • Planting and maintaining flowerbeds, trees, and shrubs
  • Operating gardening equipment like trimmers, blowers, chainsaws, and irrigation systems
  • Ensuring that the grounds look presentable at all times
  • Supporting other landscaping tasks as required
  • Helping with the maintenance of gardens and open spaces across the campus
  • Working on both hard and soft landscaping projects, such as soil preparation and irrigation setup

Requirements for Applicants:

To apply for this position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Education: At least Grade 8 level education.
  • Experience: A minimum of 2 years of experience as a landscape maintenance gardener or in a similar gardening role.
  • Skills: You must be familiar with using gardening equipment such as chainsaws, trimmers, blowers, weed eaters, and irrigation systems.
  • Physical Fitness: The job requires you to be physically fit and able to handle the physical demands of outdoor work.
  • Attention to Detail: The ability to focus on small details and ensure the work is of high quality.
  • Teamwork: A positive and collaborative attitude with the ability to work well within a team.

Advantageous Skills and Experience:

Although not required, the following qualifications and experience will be considered advantageous:

  • Knowledge of horticultural techniques, including the management of invasive plants and heritage trees.
  • Experience with hard and soft landscaping, especially planting, soil preparation, and irrigation.
  • Practical horticultural experience supported by formal qualifications (if available) in gardening, landscaping, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with sustainability practices such as composting and organic pest control.
