Role of the Communications Senior Officer – Translation

Under the supervision of the Project Manager, this role focuses on supporting the United Nations Office of Counter-Terrorism’s (UNOCT) Global Programme on Prosecution, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration (PRR). The incumbent will enhance communications initiatives while catering to the unique language and cultural needs pertaining to the Iraqi context.

Responsibilities Include:

Translation Services

    • Translate written documents, presentations, and other materials between English and Arabic, ensuring clarity and accuracy.
    • Provide simultaneous interpretation during in-person meetings and events, enabling seamless communication among stakeholders.

    Documentation and Reporting

      • Maintain meticulous records of translated documents and interpreted sessions.
      • Conduct debriefings and produce comprehensive reports of meetings, capturing key outcomes and decisions.

      Engagement Support

        • Aid in the organization and setup of relevant in-person and online engagements, ensuring effective communication networks.
        • Provide cultural context and insights to UNOCT leadership to foster understanding of sensitivities and etiquette.

        Terminology Management

          • Develop glossaries, manage terminology databases, and research technical terms to guarantee the quality and accuracy of translations.
          • Assist with language and cultural training as necessary for staff engagement.

          Multilingual Environment Facilitation

            • Facilitate communication in multilingual settings, contributing to informal interactions as appropriate.
            • Support transcription of audio and video files and conduct subject matter research based on UNOCT’s requests.

            Qualifications and Requirements

            To qualify for the Communications Senior Officer position, candidates must meet the following requirements:

            Education:

            • An advanced university degree (master’s or equivalent) in linguistics, interpretation, translation, or a related field with at least two years of relevant experience; or
            • A first-level university degree (bachelor’s degree) in linguistics, interpretation, translation, or a related field with four years of relevant experience.

            Work Experience:

            • Required: Experience in Arabic/English translation and interpretation.
            • Desirable:
            • Native proficiency in Arabic, fluency in English, with an accredited interpretation/translation certificate.
            • Experience in international affairs and context, specifically in criminal justice, transitional justice, counter-terrorism, or social cohesion.
            • Relevant experience interacting with key stakeholders and working with United Nations entities.

            Language Skills:

            • Fluency in Arabic (read, write, speak) is essential.
            • Fluency in English (read, write, speak) is also required.
            • Knowledge of any local languages is considered an advantage.
