Van Reenen’s Pass accident: Zimbabwean truck driver ON THE RUN
A search is underway for the Zimbabwean driver of a truck who reportedly fled the scene after a horror accident that claimed the lives of 17 people.

The crash took place late on Monday, 6 January on the Van Reenen’s Pass on the N3 highway in KwaZulu-Natal when a truck and minibus taxi collided.
As reported by The South African website, 17 people, including five children, were killed.
NOTE: Initial reports suggested 18 people were killed in the accident. This has been revised to 17
Reports suggest that a baby girl, who was the sole survivor, sustained severe injuries and remains in hospital.
At this early stage it’s understood that the minibus taxi lost control and swerved into the opposite lane.
Truck driver fled
The driver of the truck who reportedly fled the scene, has been identified as 37-year-old Mr N Mbedezi from Zimbabwe.
KwaZulu-Natal transport department spokesperson, Ndabezinhle Sibiya said: “There have been conflicting reports on the whereabouts and the details of the truck driver.
“We wish to report that according to our investigation, the truck driver is a foreign national, Mr N Mbedezi, a 37-year-old from Zimbabwe.
“At the time of the collision, it was raining heavily, it was dark and very misty.
“The truck belongs to Pangolin Logistics.”
The provincial Transport Department says the victims of the crash were travelers from the Eastern Cape.
According to the owner of the minibus taxi, the families of the deceased have been identified and notified of their passing.
Investigation begins
Meanwhile, following guidance from the MEC for Transport and Human Settlements, Siboniso Duma, an investigation into the cause of the horror accident has begun.
As guided by the MEC, the Head of the Department, Siboniso Mbhele is leading a technical team as part of the first phase of the investigation.
The MEC will release a statement updating the members of the fourth estate, the people of KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa about the results of the initial stages of the investigation.
Where is Van Reenen’s Pass?
Van Reenen’s Pass is a pass through the Drakensberg mountains.
The N3 freeway, the main road between Durban and Johannesburg, was constructed through the pass with the northern end of the pass lying at the border of the provinces of KwaZulu-Natal and the Free State.
The village of Van Reenen sits atop the pass and the two nearest towns are Ladysmith and Harrismith, situated in the KwaZulu-Natal and Free State provinces, respectively.
