Why Percy Tau isn’t moving to Kaizer Chiefs
Percy Tau is being lazily linked with Kaizer Chiefs as his Al Ahly contract winds down. Here’s why he won’t be a Glamour Boy though.
Al Ahly stint is coming to an end
According to SoccerLaduma, Percy Tau won’t stay at Al Ahly beyond the end of the current campaign. Egyptian outfit Cairo24 reports that the 30-year-old Bafana star won’t extend his contract which expires at the end of the 2024-2025 campaign. This, therefore, is his final season with the Caf Champions League holders. This is, according to reports, owing to his advancing age and unsustainable wage demands.
Despite rumours that Tau’s relationship with the Al Ahly manager Marcel Kohler has broken down, he’s played a pivotal role in their recent dominance and silverware haul. Tau has won 10 major trophies with the club since joining from Brighton in 2021.
Pitso wants Percy
According to iDiski Times, Pitso Mosimane’s team Esteghlal holds a crucial advantage over Kaizer Chiefs in the race for Percy Tau. Would Chiefs be able to compete for Tau’s signature with the lure of Pitso Mosimane right there, not to mention the opportunity to earn good money in another foreign league?
Tau wants trophies, can Kaizer Chiefs give him that?
At this stage of his career, Percy Tau will want to maximise his earning and winning potential. He might be able to fetch a decent salary at Chiefs but the likelihood of winning silverware is slim. The Glamour Boys haven’t won any trophies since 2015 when they held aloft their last Betway Premiership title. They lie 7th in the league in 2024-2025 so that drought will continue.
Orlando Pirates are flying in the Caf Champions League
The Buccaneers are touching distance from qualification into the Caf Champions League knockout stages. They beat the Ivorian outfit Stade d’Abidjan 3-0 courtesy of goals from Relebohjile Mofokeng, Patrick Maswanganyi and Deon Hotto. They’re sitting pretty in Group C with two wins and two draws from four matches. Jose Riveiro’s men go toe-to-toe with Percy Tau and Al Ahly on 18 January. There’s also a mouthwatering Sowet Derby on 01 Feb.
