Will Kaizer Chiefs ever learn from their costly mistakes?
Kaizer Chiefs have made some questionable decisions on and off the pitch during a long trophy drought.
Mdantsane failed to deliver
At his peak value, transfermarkt estimates that Mduduzi Mdantsane was at his most desirable in the market in February 2023 when they gauged him to be worth 1.2m (R22.8 million). Now, exactly two years later, they figure he’s worth half that (R11.4 million). Injuries have ravaged his time at Naturena, including a terribly unfortunate one sustained in a car accident, but when fit his form hasn’t been to the standard expected by Chiefs. He cost something in the region of R13 million. Whether they can recoup any of that money after his loan spell with Richards Bay is unclear. A clearly talented player, he’s flattered to deceive.
Is Bhengu on his way?
If Bhengu arrived, it wouldn’t be the first time Chiefs have splurged on players they nurtured in their development structures before allowing them to leave. It’s estimated that Chiefs spent R15 million in collective transfer fees on Mduduzi Mdantsane and Zitha Kwinika. Both came through the club’s development.
Kaizer Chiefs to land Salum for free?
According to SoccerLaduma, Chiefs have received encouragement in their chase of Tanzanian midfielder Feisal Salum. The 27-year-old is unlikely to stay at his current club Azam beyond the end of this season. An attacking midfielder with an eye for goal, Salum knows Nasreddine Nabi and Cedric Kaze well after working together at Yanga SC. The schemer has 41 caps for his country.
Sundowns are next
You have to go back to April 2021 for Chiefs’ last win over the South African champions in any competition. Ironically, Uruguayan Gaston Sirino was a goal-scorer for Downs on that afternoon. Downs are unbeaten in each of the last NINE H2Hs across all competitions. Five players are currently on the treatment table which you can see listed below. They must also battle the Brazilians without former Sundowns star Gaston Sirino, who’s suspended after a dismissal against SuperSport United. Chiefs lost 4-1 at Gavin Hunt’s Matsatsantsa side last time out.
