,The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is at the forefront of the global effort to combat climate change. Supporting international climate negotiations, implementing commitments, and facilitating key meetings of the Parties, the UNFCCC secretariat is a vital player in addressing one of the most pressing issues of our time. To foster the next generation of climate leaders and professionals, the UNFCCC is offering an immersive internship opportunity within its Conference Affairs division, specifically in the Document Management unit.

About the Internship

This internship offers a unique chance for students or recent graduates in editing, translation, or related fields to gain hands-on experience working within a dynamic international organization. The internship will span three months, starting on August 18, 2025, and concluding on November 14, 2025. The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work both on-site at the UNFCCC secretariat’s headquarters in Bonn, Germany, and remotely, depending on the internship conditions.

Background of the Organization

The UNFCCC supports global efforts to address climate change through the Convention, the Kyoto Protocol, and the Paris Agreement. It provides essential organizational and substantive backing for international meetings and the implementation of climate commitments. The secretariat operates in a complex, politically sensitive environment, requiring meticulous attention to detail, clear communication, and high standards of professionalism.

Within this context, the Document Management unit plays a critical role by preparing and managing official documents related to climate negotiations. The unit ensures that conference documentation is accurate, properly formatted, and submitted on time for dissemination and publication on the UNFCCC website.

Internship Objectives and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of experienced editors, the intern will support the unit with various editing and proofreading tasks. Their responsibilities will include:

  • Ensuring that documents conform to UNFCCC and UN editorial policies and style standards, especially given the sensitive nature of many documents.
  • Clarifying ambiguities, correcting errors, and verifying technical terminology and references through research and consultation with authors.
  • Revising texts to improve clarity, flow, and consistency, and ensuring proper formatting according to UN guidelines.
  • Assisting in the preparation of official conference documentation, contributing to the overall quality and accuracy of materials used in high-level climate negotiations.

Candidate Profile

Applicants should be enrolled in the final year of an undergraduate degree or pursuing graduate studies (master’s or PhD) in fields related to editing, translation, or linguistics. Candidates must demonstrate:

  • Native-level proficiency in English (both oral and written).
  • Strong editing and revising skills, with attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in relevant software, such as Microsoft Office 365.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a multicultural environment.

Experience in editing or translation, familiarity with UN editorial standards, and a keen interest in climate change issues are highly desirable.

Technical and Logistical Details

  • Duration: Three months, from August 18, 2025, to November 14, 2025.
  • Location: Part on-site at the UNFCCC headquarters in Bonn, Germany, and part remotely.
  • Technology Requirements: Interns need a Windows 10 or newer PC/laptop, reliable high-speed internet, antivirus software, updated browser, and a mobile phone for dual-factor authentication.
  • Compensation: The internship is unpaid; interns are responsible for their own costs related to travel, accommodation, and other expenses.

Application Process

Interested candidates who meet the formal requirements should apply online via the UNFCCC internship portal. The application must include a cover letter detailing motivation and relevant skills. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted for interviews, and the deadline for applications is June 22, 2025.
