The UNWTO’s Mission

As the leading international organization in the field of tourism, the UNWTO champions responsible tourism as a vital driver of socio-economic growth and inclusive development. Our mission goes beyond promoting tourism; we strive to ensure that this growth leaves no one behind. We firmly believe in the power of tourism to create jobs, stimulate economic development, and foster cultural understanding.

At the core of our operational strategy lies a robust framework of statistical measurement and standards, which enhances our understanding of tourism’s contribution to economies worldwide. Over the years, in collaboration with the international community, we have developed significant measurement standards, including the International Recommendations for Tourism Statistics 2008 (IRTS 2008) and the Tourism Satellite Account: Recommended Methodological Framework 2008 (TSA: RMF 2008).

Through the Tourism Satellite Account, we aim to provide a comprehensive understanding of tourism as an integral component of national economies. TSAs are not merely data collections; they are valuable tools to monitor and refine public policies surrounding tourism development and a powerful advocacy resource for National Tourism Administrations (NTAs).

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Tourism Statistics Expert, your role will be pivotal in shaping the tourism statistics systems of member states. Your primary responsibilities will include:

Project Planning and Execution

    • Attend online meetings and engage in desk research to create an initial inventory and assess available data sources. Formulate a comprehensive work plan for the implementation of the TSA project tailored to each member state’s unique context.

    Awareness Raising

      • Promote awareness of the UN statistical standard: the Tourism Satellite Account: Recommended Methodological Framework 2008, ensuring stakeholders understand its importance and applications in enhancing tourism data collection.

      Review and Recommendations

        • Conduct a thorough review of the existing System of Tourism Statistics. Analyze all tourism-related data sources and TSA tables already compiled, verifying data accuracy and providing actionable recommendations for improvement.

        Capacity Building

          • Support and strengthen the institutional framework of member states by enhancing statistical capacity. This includes organizing and implementing training programs tailored for various government stakeholders, such as Ministries of Tourism, National Tourism Statistic Offices, Immigration authorities, and Central Banks.

          Workshops and Training

            • Conduct national and regional workshops focused on Statistics and TSAs aimed at government officials and public-private sector stakeholders. Foster a culture of data-driven decision-making and enhanced statistical literacy.

            Stakeholder Engagement

              • Collaborate with a diverse range of stakeholders to identify data needs, implement effective data collection programs, and uphold high standards of data quality. Build partnerships that further the goals of sustainable tourism development.

              Qualifications and Skills

We are looking for candidates who are passionate about tourism and possess the following qualifications:

              • A degree in Statistics, Economics, Tourism Management, or a related field.
              • Extensive experience in tourism statistics, economic analysis, or related areas.
              • Familiarity with the International Recommendations for Tourism Statistics and Tourism Satellite Accounts frameworks.

              • Experience in conducting training programs and workshops is preferred.
